Methodology: Manual

Clinical Significance: To evaluate the presence of lymphoma cells when a complete differential is not needed.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri, dayshift.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 2 hours.
Routine: 24 hours.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Container: Preferred: K3EDTA-Lavender top
Also Acceptable: K2EDTA-Lavender top, Pink top tube

Collection Volume: Preferred: 4 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Sample Analyzed: Whole Blood

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Processing: Keep specimen at room temperature.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen with coolant pack to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) within 8 hours of collection.

Unacceptable Criteria: Hemolyzed or clotted specimens are not acceptable.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

A Wright-stained peripheral smear will be reviewed in the UWHC Bone Marrow Laboratory. If abnormal cells are detected, a written hematopathologist's report may be issued.
