Specimen Requirements

Specimen:		Semen


Patient Preparation:		Recommend 2-3 days abstinence prior to specimen collection.


Collection Instructions:		Special container is required. Patient needs to contact Generations Fertility Care at (608) 824-6160 to arrange an appointment for collection or to pick up collection material.


Collection Container:		Preferred: Sterile screw cap container provided by Generations Fertility Care


Specimen Transport:		Avoid temperature extremes. Transport specimen within 30 minutes of collection.


Interpretation

Reference Interval:		Sperm Concentration: > = 15 M/mL % Motility: > = 40% Volume: > = 1.5 mL pH: > 7.2 Round cells/hpf: < = 5 M/mL % Normal forms: > = 4% (Interpretation based on Kruger's Strict Criteria) Reference ranges are derived from the 5th Edition of the World Health Organization recommendations (2010). Additional non-reported analysis parameters are available upon request.


Additional Information:		If round cells are greater than 5 M/mL, a differential will be done to distinguish between WBC's, immature sperm cells and non-specific cellular objects.
