Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Stool, duodenal biopsy or fluid, bile, sputum, bronchial wash, or pulmonary biopsy

Collection Instructions: See instructions included in Para-PakŪ Ova & Parasite (O&P) kit (pink and gray caps) for the collection of stool. Do not contaminate stool with urine during collection. For non-stool specimens, collect specimen in sterile screw cap container.

Collection Container: Preferred: See collection instructions.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231).

Unacceptable Criteria: Specimens on patients hospitalized more than 3 days are not acceptable unless the patient is immunocompromised. See "Additional Information" below.

Stability: Ambient: Unpreserved: 1 hour; Para-PakŪ: Unlimited

Frozen: Not acceptable

Because these agents do not cause hospital acquired infections, specimens on patients who have been hospitalized greater than 3 days will require approval of the Director of Microbiology or Pathology Resident.
