Methodology: Isolator®/Lysis Centrifugation

Clinical Significance: For detection of fungi including Malassezia furfur, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, Sporothrix schenckii, Fusarium species

Days Performed: Daily.

Turnaround Time: Stat: Not available stat.
Routine: Preliminary report: Negative cultures 3 days. Final report: Negative cultures 28 days.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: Approval required by UWHC Director of Microbiology (608 263-4445), UWHC Infectious Diseases service (contact UWHC paging at 608 262-2122) or UWHC Clinical Pathology Resident (contact UWHC paging).

Blood must be aseptically collected. ChloraPrep Frepp the site. Preclean port of central line. Draw one - 10 mL Isolator® tube (1.5 mL Isolator® tube for pediatric patients) from each of 2 sites. Invert tube 4-5 times to mix.

Collection Container: Preferred: Isolator® tube

Collection Volume: Preferred: 9 mL
Pediatrics: 1.5 mL

Sample Analyzed: Whole Blood

Volume Required: Preferred: 7.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231) within 2 hours of collection.

Stability: Ambient: 16 hours
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable
