|
Aids in the diagnosis of trichomoniasis. For vaginal specimens, testing for yeast and bacterial vaginosis (gram stain) is also highly recommended.

| Turnaround Time: |
|
Routine: Smear/Stain: Up to 8 hours. Preliminary report: Trichomonas cultures 2 days. Final report: 5 days.

|
FEMALES: Vaginal, urethral, or cervical swab (amniotic fluid also acceptable); MALES: Urethral swab, urine, semen, or prostatic secretions.
|

| Specimen Transport: |
|
Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231) within 2 hours of collection. Send In PouchTV with prewarmed 37°C gel pack in a separate carrier. Do not use heat packs as they can be too warm.
Male urine specimens should be transported to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231) within 30 minutes of collection.

| Unacceptable Criteria: |
|
Trichomonas culture not performed if transport of swab to lab is delayed greater than 8 hours.

Negative for Trichomonas

| Test Limitations: |
|
Wet preps have low sensitivity (50%) for trichomonas.
