Test Name: Culture, Yeast, Vaginal

Test Description: Test Component:

Yeast culture; smear if requested.

Methodology: Culture, Microscopy

Clinical Significance: Aids in the diagnosis of candidiasis. For vaginal specimens, also testing for Trichomonas and bacterial vaginosis (gram stain) is highly recommended.

Days Performed: Daily.

Turnaround Time: Routine: Smear/Stain: Calcofluor white stain 8 hours. Culture: Preliminary - report 24 hours. Culture: Final report - 48 hours.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Vaginal swabs

Collection Container: Preferred: CultureSwab®

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology Laboratory (B4/231) within 2 hours of collection.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable


Expected Results:

No Yeast Isolated

Test Limitations:

Wet preps have low sensitivity (50%) for yeast.

Additional Information:

Calcofluor White stain is available STAT for ED only (1 hr turnaround time).
