Methodology: Microscopy

Clinical Significance: Aids in the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. Also, testing for yeast and Trichomonas is highly recommended.

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 1 hour.
Routine: 8 hours.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Vaginal swabs

Collection Instructions: Submit swab of vaginal fluid collected from the posterior vaginal walls or of fluid pooled at the posterior fornix. AVOID THE CERVIX AND CERVICAL DISCHARGE.

Collection Container: Preferred: 2 CultureSwabs®

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231) within 2 hours of collection.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable


Expected Results:

Negative for bacterial vaginosis.

Additional Information:

Separate specimens must be collected for diagnosis of cervicitis (see Gonorrhea Culture or Neisseria gonorrhoeae by PCR).
