Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: Available to Infectious Diseases physicians only. All other requests require UWHC Director of Microbiology approval. Call 608 263-4445 (pager 5569).

Blood must be aseptically collected. ChloraPrep Frepp the site. Preclean port of central line. Draw one - 10 mL Isolator® tube (1.5 mL Isolator® tube for pediatric patients) from each port and by venipuncture. Peripheral and line drawn specimens must be collected at the same time. Invert tube 4-5 times to mix.

Collection Container: Preferred: Isolator® tube

Collection Volume: Preferred: 9 mL
Pediatrics: 1.5 mL

Sample Analyzed: Whole Blood

Volume Required: Preferred: 7.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231) within 2 hours of collection.

Stability: Ambient: 4 hours
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable
