Routine: Preliminary report: 7 days. Final report: Up to 4 weeks.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Sputum, tissue, urine or body fluids

Patient Preparation: Standard aseptic collection procedures should be followed.

Collection Instructions: Sputum, tissue, or 2.0 mL of body fluids in sterile, screw top container. Urine is appropriate only when disseminated mould (not Candida) infection is suspected. A single specimen is sufficient for performing fungal and aerobic/anaerobic culture if collected in anaerobic transport (ACT 1) tube.

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231).

Unacceptable Criteria: Swab specimens collected during surgery are not acceptable.

In most cases use of swabs does not provide adequate sample for culture.

Stability: Ambient: 12 hours
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: Not acceptable

Preliminary negative results reported after 7 days. Final negative results reported after 4 weeks. 


All susceptibility requests will be reviewed prior to testing.


Smears not routinely performed on CSF. If CSF, order Culture, Fungal [HCFCULT].
