Methodology: Culture

Clinical Significance: Culture for beta Streptococcus (S.pyogenes group A and S. dysgalactiae group C and G). Indicate if Arcanobacterium haemolyticum is suspected.

Turnaround Time: Stat: Not available stat.
Routine: Preliminary report: 24 hours. Final report: Negative cultures 48 hours. Reports on specimens from which suspicious colonies are seen may require additional time for completion.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Pharyngeal swab

Collection Instructions: Using a tongue depressor, gently depress the tongue and use a sterile swab to collect a specimen from between the tonsillar pillars and behind the uvula. Sweep the swab back and forth across the posterior pharynx, tonsillar areas, and any inflamed or ulcerated areas to obtain sample. Avoid touching the tongue, uvula, cheeks, or lips.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231).

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable
