Test Description: Test Component:

Quantitative culture and Gram stain


Methodology: Culture, Microscopy

Clinical Significance: Intended use is for burn patients and patients with necrotizing fasciitis

Days Performed: Daily.

Turnaround Time: Routine: Preliminary report: 24 hours. Final report: Negative cultures 5 days. Report on specimens from which pathogens are isolated require a minimum of 48 hours for completion.

Specimen: Tissue

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 0.4 g
Pediatrics: 0.2 g

Sample Analyzed: Tissue

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.4 g
Pediatrics: 0.2 g

Specimen Transport: Transport to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231) within 1 hour of collection.

Stability: Ambient: 1 hour
Refrigerated: 2 days
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

Expected Results:

No growth at 10 to the 3rd CFU/g

Additional Information:

If necrotizing fasciitis or Fournier's Gangrene, order Culture, Tissue, Quant, Aer/Ana with Gram Stain.
