Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.3 mL

Sample Analyzed: Body fluid aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.3 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Interpretation

Interpretive Guidelines:

Indicative of Chylous Effusion:

     Age 0 days and up:

     Chylomicrons Present

     Triglycerides above serum level and/or > 110 mg/dL

     Cholesterol less than or equal to serum level

     Cholesterol/Triglycerides ratio < 1

 

Note: A Chol/Trig ratio of >1 suggests specimen contamination with plasma.

This test was performed using a modification of an FDA approved method.  The performance characteristics of this test were determined by the UWHC Clinical Laboratories and meet the standards for clinical testing.
