Clinical Significance: The HLA-B27 antigen is associated with Ankylosing Spondylitis and several other related diseases.  The absence of B27 may be used to rule out the associated disease.

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: Do NOT open tube.

Collection Container: Preferred: Lavender top
Also Acceptable: Yellow top(with ACD-A/B anticoagulant)

Collection Volume: Preferred: Full 4 mL tube
Pediatrics: 2 mL

Volume Required: Preferred: 4 mL
Pediatrics: 2 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) immediately.

Stability: Ambient: 7 days
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

 

 Negative:  HLA-B27 antigen not detected
 Positive:  HLA-B27 antigen detected
