Methodology: Flocculation

Clinical Significance: Nontreponemal screening test for syphilis.

This test should be requested for initial diagnosis of syphilis.  For post-treatment follow-up testing where confirmatory testing is not required, please order "RPR, No Confirmation".

Request Form: UWHC Laboratory Request Form (UWH 1289220, 4004202); Write in test if not on form.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri.

Turnaround Time: Routine: Next working day.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Container: Preferred: Red top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Sample Analyzed: Serum

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.3 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge immediately.  Transfer cell-free serum to plastic vial.  Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Ambient: Remove from cells immediately
Refrigerated: 5 days
Frozen: 1 year

Nonreactive

Additional Information:

Reactive samples are forwarded to the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene for confirmation by TP-PA.

 

This method is approved for diagnostic testing only.  It is not approved for screening tissue donors that fall under FDA's HCT/P requirements.
