Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or ventricular fluid

Collection Instructions: 0.2 mL of CSF or ventricular fluid is sufficient volume for glucose, protein, and chloride.

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container
Also Acceptable: Numbered specimen tube from sterile disposable lumbar puncture tray, Red top

Sample Analyzed: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or ventricular fluid aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.1 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge. Transfer cell-free supernate to plastic vial. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) immediately. Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours
Refrigerated: 3 days
