Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Container: Preferred: Lavender top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 4 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Sample Analyzed: Plasma

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge.  Transfer cell-free plasma to plastic vial. Freeze specimen.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location. Transport frozen plasma on dry ice.

Unacceptable Criteria: Glass tubes are not acceptable for this method.

Stability: Ambient: 4 hours
Refrigerated: plasma - 24 hours
Frozen: plasma - 9 months


Interpretation

Reference Interval:

0-99 pg/mL

Test Limitations:

Results may be affected if patient has developed heterophilic antibodies due to exposure to animal based protein products.

A high dose hook effect is not seen up to 100,000 ng/mL.
