Test Name: Myoglobin, Urine

Methodology: Ammonium Sulfate Precipitation

Clinical Significance: Test limited to Inpatient & ED.
Urine Myoglobin may be useful in suspected skeletal muscle injury or acute kidney failure without obvious cause.  Consider creatine kinase (CK). Urine Myoglobin is not useful for monitoring cardiac injury.  For suspected cardiac injury see Troponin.

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 1 hour.
Routine: 2 hours.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Random urine

Collection Instructions: Urine specimen must be FRESH (less than 2 hours old).

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 10 mL
Pediatrics: 10 mL

Sample Analyzed: Urine aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 10 mL
Pediatrics: 10 mL

Specimen Processing: Test is performed on inpatients and ED patients only.  Patient must have a urinalysis within 12 hours with a positive heme for this test to be performed. If a urinalysis was not performed within the last 12 hours or if the heme result was negative, the myoglobin test will be canceled.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) immediately. Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Unacceptable Criteria: - Specimens greater than 2 hours old when received by the laboratory are not acceptable.
- This test is not available to ambulatory patients.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable
