Test Name: Myoglobin, Urine

Clinical Significance: Test limited to Inpatient & ED.
Urine Myoglobin may be useful in suspected skeletal
muscle injury or acute kidney failure without obvious
cause.  Consider creatine kinase (CK). Urine Myoglobin is
not useful for monitoring cardiac injury.  For suspected
cardiac injury see Troponin.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Instructions: Test is performed on inpatients and ED patients only.  
Patient must have a urinalysis within 12 hours with a
positive heme for this test to be performed. If a
urinalysis was not performed within the last 12 hours or
if the heme result was negative, the myoglobin test will
be canceled.

Unacceptable Criteria: - Specimens greater than 1 hours old room temperature, or 2
hours old refrigerated, when received by the laboratory are
not acceptable.
- This test is not available to ambulatory patients.
