Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Patient Preparation: Patient must be fasting for 10-14 hours (water, black coffee and calorie free drinks are allowed) and heparin free for 48 hours if ordered as part of an estimated LDL panel.  If the HDL cholesterol is ordered alone, fasting is not required.

Collection Container: Preferred: Green cap with yellow ring (PST)
Also Acceptable: Green top, Red cap with yellow ring (SST), Red top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.4 mL

Sample Analyzed: Plasma or serum

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.2 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge.  If a complete barrier has not formed, transfer cell-free plasma/serum to plastic vial.  Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: 3 months at -70


Interpretation

Interpretive Guidelines:

  

Age 0 days - 19 years:

Based on NHLBI Guidelines

 
 < 40 mg/dL Low (increased cardiovascular risk)
 40 - 45 mg/dL Borderline
 > 45 mg/dL Acceptable
   

Age 20 years and up:

Based on NCEP ATP - III Guidelines

 
 < 40 mg/dL Low (increased cardiovascular risk)
 > 60 mg/dL High (decreased cardiovascular risk)
