Test Description: Test Component:

Urine albumin, collection volume and period.


Methodology: Nephelometry

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Overnight timed urine

Patient Preparation: No vigorous exercise during 4 hours prior to collection. Patients should not collect urine specimen during menses, since blood in the sample may affect test results.

Collection Instructions: Collect all urine excreted during the patient's sleep period including the first morning void. Collection container must be free of any preservatives.  For a timed collection, indicate date and time collection started and date and time collection finished.  Timed collections must be for a period of 22-26 hours.  

Collection Container: Preferred: 24 hour urine container

Collection Volume: Preferred: Entire collection
Pediatrics: Entire collection

Sample Analyzed: Urine aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.4 mL

Specimen Processing: Indicate collection period and volume. Mix specimen. Transfer 5 mL into a screw cap container. Do not freeze.

Specimen Transport: Transport entire specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) at close of collection. Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Unacceptable Criteria: Collection container contaminated with preservative is not acceptable.

Stability: Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: Not acceptable

Reference Interval:

2 years and up (male and female):  0.0-19.9 mcg/min         

 

   Interpretive Guidelines:

< 20.0 mcg/min 

Normal

20.0-199.9 mcg/min 

Microalbuminuria

> 199.9 mcg/min
