Athletic Training Residency Program Goals and Opportunities
The UW Health Athletic Training Residency Program prepares the athletic trainer to be a complete and versatile health care provider within the orthopedic clinic setting.
Goals
- To explicitly train the experienced athletic trainer to work within any orthopedic clinic environment through their experience gained at one of the top comprehensive academic orthopedic programs in the country.
- To provide educational opportunities regarding leading orthopedic surgical and rehabilitation techniques within general orthopedics and sports medicine.
- To educate the athletic trainer regarding the general medical implications that affect orthopedic care.
- Become orthopedic tech certified (OTC) and be able to apply and remove orthopedic and casting materials as well as fit and modify appropriate durable medical equipment.
- To expose the athletic trainer to the operating room environment.
- To educate the athletic trainer across the spectrum of musculoskeletal radiology and other diagnostic tests associated with the field of orthopedics.
- To expose and allow the athletic trainer to assist in outcomes-based research within an orthopedic setting.
Opportunities
- 12-month program
- 40 hours radiology training
- Daily contact with the clinic physicians while assisting with patient care as a physician extender
- Observation time in the operating room
- Monthly case presentations
- Exposure to rehabilitation concepts at every step of the treatment process
- Participation in weekly educational meetings with physician and allied health staff across the UW Health Sports Medicine program
- Participation and/or attendance at conferences sponsored by UW Health Sports Medicine
- Representation of UW Health Sports Medicine at designated athletic venues by providing medical coverage
- Complete evaluations after each rotation
