Applying to the Program
Selection Criteria
Application to the Dietetic Internship Program requires successful completion of the ADA Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements and UW Hospital and Clinics employment requirements.
Interns are selected based on:
- Scholastic achievement
- Academic background
- Written and oral expression
- Work experience
- Professional activities
- Leadership abilities
- Professional References
In the past, the students selected typically have a graduate GPA greater than 3.0 and a minimum of 520 paid hours in clinical and food service experience.
Application Materials
Qualified candidates for the Dietetic Intern positions should submit a formal employment application. The employment application does include successful completion of an online behavioral assessment.
Additional application materials include:
- Letter of Interest including:
- Professional goals upon completion of an internship
- Reasons you selected this internship program
- Description of how your previous work experience contributed to your learning
- Description of how research experiences and results contributed to your learning
- Description of your proficiency with food and nutrition computer applications
- A completed Dietetic Internship Program Application Form (doc). Students are encouraged to use the computerized application form developed by the American Dietetic Association. You may also request a hard copy of the order form by contacting Marge Morgan, RD, MS. Once you complete the application, please print and include it in your application packet.
- A verification statement signed by your DPD Representative, confirming that you have met Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) academic requirements, or Declaration of Intent plus a list of courses to be completed, signed by your DPD Representative.
- One official transcript from each university or college you have attended.
- Three references including the Waiver and Recommendation Form (doc). The official ADA reference forms may be obtained from the ADA and are included with the purchase of the application form. They can also be requested by contacting Marge Morgan, RD, MS, as noted above or by selecting the link above.
- Two references should be from professors in food and nutrition, institution food service management, biochemistry or area of graduate work.
- One reference should be from a supervisor of work experience.
- Application processing fee (non-refundable) of $35 as a check or money order made payable to UW Hospital and Clinics.

Application packets should be postmarked on or before September 25 for the February class or before February 16 for the August class.
The American Dietetic Association requires that all applicants to Dietetic Internships must participate in computer matching. Applicants should request instructions and a mark/sense card to prioritize their dietetic internship preferences. Applicants should request this material from any ADA-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics or from D&D Digital Systems. There is no charge for this material. However, there is a $50 charge for computer matching that is due with the applicant's prioritized ranking. Address requests to:
