¿Qué es el monitoro del pH de 24 horas?
El monitoreo del pH es utilizado para diagnosticar reflujo esofágico. Se introducirá en el esófago un tubo pequeño y flexible a través de la nariz. (Vea la imagen de abajo). La enfermera conectará el tubo a un aparato pequeño de grabación/registro que mide la cantidad de ácido presente en el esófago.
¿Por qué se realiza el Monitoreo del pH de 24 Horas?
El monitoreo del pH se realiza para medir la frecuencia con la que el ácido estomacal puede estar entrando en el esófago y si esto está relacionado con sus síntomas. El esófago tiene dos funciones principales: (1) transporta alimentos de la boca al estómago, y (2) mantiene los alimentos digeridos en el estómago. En la entrada del estómago, hay un grupo de músculos que funcionan como una válvula para evitar que los alimentos suban de nuevo hacia el esófago. Cuando esta válvula no funciona apropiadamente, Usted puede tener síntomas como agruras (acidez), dolor, o tos debido al reflujo del ácido estomacal.
Antes de la prueba
Puede tomar sus medicamentos regulares hasta 4 horas antes del estudio, incluyendo los medicamentos para el reflujo gastroesofágico (acidez). En casos especiales, quizás le indiquemos que suspenda los medicamentos bloqueadores de ácido de acuerdo a las órdenes de su doctor.

El día del procedimiento
- No coma ni beba nada durante 4 horas antes de la prueba. Una vez que el tubo esté colocado, le pedirán que coma y beba como lo hace normalmente. Si ha notado que ciertas comidas empeoran sus síntomas, por favor téngalas disponibles en casa y cómalas durante la prueba.
- Venga con una blusa o camisa con botones enfrente. Esto facilitará que se cambie de ropa más tarde.
Siga las instrucciones de llegada y registro que se encuentran en su carta de presentación. Si va a llegar tarde, llámenos al (608) 263-8094 para informarnos. Si llega con más de 30 minutos de retraso, es posible que tengamos que cancelar la prueba y hacerle otra cita. Hacemos todo lo posible por ser puntuales. Después de registrarse, hablará con una enfermera. Por favor, no dude en hacer cualquier pregunta que tenga en ese momento. Su visita en la clínica durará aproximadamente una hora. Aprenderá a usar un diario para registrar sus síntomas y las horas de las comidas durante las próximas 22 a 24 horas.
Durante la prueba
Le entumeceremos la nariz e introduciremos un pequeño tubo en el esófago a través de la nariz. Es posible que realicemos una radiografía tras colocar el tubo para verificar su posición.
- Es importante que maneje el aparato de grabación de datos con cuidado. No lo deje caer ni lo golpee.
- No se duche ni tome un baño durante el transcurso de esta prueba.
Usted regresará al día siguiente para que le saquen el tubo. Esto sólo durará unos minutos. No necesita hacer cita. Por favor, traiga consigo el diario.
Después de la prueba
Se introducirán en la computadora los resultados de su diario y la grabación del pH. Su doctor recibirá los resultados de la prueba. Podrá reanudar su dieta y actividad normales cuando acabe la prueba.

What Happens Before, During, and After
This handout explains pH monitoring. You may find it helpful to jot down any questions you may have about the test and discuss them with your nurse or doctor.
What is 24-hour pH monitoring?
pH monitoring is used to diagnose esophageal reflux. A small flexible tube is passed through your nose into your esophagus. (See below). The nurse connects the tube to a small recording device that measures the acid present in your esophagus.
Why is 24-hour pH Monitoring Performed?
pH monitoring is done to measure how often acid may be leaking into the esophagus from the stomach and if this relates to your symptoms. The esophagus has two main functions: (1) transport food from the mouth to the stomach, and (2) keep the digested food in the stomach. At the entrance to the stomach, a set of muscles works like a valve to stop food from coming back up into the esophagus. When this valve is not working as it should, you may have symptoms such as heartburn, pain, or cough from the acid reflux.
Before the Test
You may take your usual medicines up to 4 hours before the study, including acid reflux medicine. In special cases, we may instruct you to stop taking acid blocking medicine according to your doctor’s orders.

If you have any questions, you may contact your doctor or the Gastroenterology Procedure Center at the contact numbers listed below.
Day of Procedure
- Have nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before your test. After the tube is placed, you will be asked to eat and drink normally. If you have noticed any foods that make your symptoms worse, please have those available at home to eat during your test.
- Wear a blouse or shirt with buttons down the front. This makes it easier to change clothes later.
Follow the arrival and registration instructions in your cover letter. If you are delayed, call us at (608) 263-8094 to let us know you are going to be late. If you are over thirty minutes late, we may have to cancel and reschedule. We do our best to stay on time. After you check in, you will speak to a nurse. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have at that time. Your clinic visit will take about one hour. You will learn how to use a diary to record your symptoms and meal times during the next 22 to 24 hours.
During the Test
Your nose will be numbed and a small tube inserted through your nose and into your esophagus. An x-ray may be done after the tube is placed to verify tube position.
- It is important to handle the data recorder with care. Do not drop or bang it.
- Do not shower or take a bath during this test.
You will return the next day to have the tube removed. This takes just a few minutes. No appointment is required for this. Please bring your diary with you.
After the Test
Results from your diary and the pH recorder will be entered into a computer. Results of the test will be sent to your doctor. You may return to your normal diet and activities when you are done with the test.
