Pediatric Urology Elimination Program
• Children should have between six and eight , 8 ounce servings of fluid a day.
• At least half of the fluid that your child drinks should be water.
• Decrease or avoid drinks that have caffeine, carbonation (bubbles), citrus and chocolate. They may irritate your child’s bladder and cause more wetting accidents.
• Go to the bathroom when you wake up in the morning.
• Make a routine of going to the bathroom every 2 hours during the day. Ask your child to relax and do not rush while using the bathroom. This will help to fully empty your bladder.
• A watch with a beeper or timer will help your child remember when it’s time to use the bathroom.
• Use a foot stool to keep your child’s feet flat and relax while using the bathroom.
Create Regular Bowel Habits
• Goal: Eat 18 grams of fiber every day. Bran fiber is best. Add foods such as whole grain bread and cereal, wheat and rice bran, dried peas and beans, vegetables, fruits and nuts.
• Goal: Have one long, soft and easy to pass stool daily. This is a type 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart.
• Talk to your provider about giving your child a fiber supplement if your child continues to have trouble with having daily, soft bowel movements.
• Talk to your provider about adding a stool softener or laxative.
Good Hygiene (For Girls)
• Change out of wet clothes as soon as possible.
• Ask your child to sit on the toilet with her legs opened wide and her elbows on her knees. Her feet can be placed on a foot stool so that they are kept flat.
• Send extra clothing to school in case of wetting accidents.
• Wipe front to back, wear cotton underwear, and avoid bubble baths and soaps with dyes or perfumes.
• Use diaper creams on skin to protect and help heal irritated skin from wet clothing.
Simple Tips for You and Your Child
Void in a Steady Stream
• Running the water in the sink can help to show your child what a “steady stream” should look like.
• Breathe in and out slowly.
• Boys: Place cheerios in the toilet bowl and have your child try to sink them. Place soap in the bottom of a training chair. A steady stream will cause the soap to make bubbles .
• Girls: Sit on the toilet with the legs open wide, place elbows on the knees, and use a foot stool to keep feet flat.
Return to a Normal Bowel Pattern
• Plan meals and take your time eating.
• Set times to use the bathroom. Encourage your child to relax and don’t rush.
• Decrease caffeine, carbonation (bubbles), chocolate and citrus in your child’s diet.
• Increase the amount of fiber and fluid your child gets.
• Get more activity time. Being more active, can help your child have a bowel movement.
What is Fiber?
It is what is left after the plant food we eat has passed through the digestive tract and is either soluble or insoluble. Fiber and water work as a team to relieve constipation.
• Soluble Fiber: Dissolves in water and affects how food is absorbed and digested.
• Insoluble Fiber (Roughage): Absorbs water to soften and add bulk to our stools. This makes, what we eat, move faster through the stomach and helps your child have more bowel movements.
First Line of Defense: Follow the Elimination Program
• Increase Fluids
• Increase Fiber
• Timed Voiding: Have your child use the bathroom at least every 2 hours to help keep the bladder empty.
Second Line of Defense: Talk to your provider before using these medications
• Fiber Supplements: examples are Fiber Choice® or Yummy Bears ®
• Stool Softeners and laxatives can be used if necessary: examples are
Miralx® , Phillips® , or Senokot ®
