Pediatric Neurosychological Testing - Spanish
Su doctor ha solicitado que su hijo tenga una evaluación neuropsicológica. Evaluaremos las habilidades cognitivas de su hijo. Esto puede incluir:
- Resolución de problemas
- Memoria

- Atención
- Lenguaje
- Habilidades académicas
Esta evaluación proporcionará a su doctor información útil sobre los puntos fuertes de su hijo y cualquier problema que pueda tener.
Lo que debe hacer
En la mayoría de los casos, las compañías de seguro médico requieren una referencia (referral). Contacte a su compañía de seguro médico para comprobar si cubre el costo de la evaluación. Compruebe también que su doctor haya enviado una referencia. Llame a la Clínica de Neuropsicología (Neuropsychology Clinic) al 608-263-5430 para hacer una cita. El miembro del personal que programe la cita para su hijo hablará con usted sobre los detalles de la misma.
Uno de los padres debe venir con el niño y permanecer allí durante la evaluación. Planee que la cita durará medio día si el niño es menor de 6 años y un día entero si el niño tiene 6 años y en adelante. Una cita de un día entero puede durar 6 horas o un día escolar típico. La duración de la cita dependerá de las preguntas que haga el doctor de su hijo y los hallazgos del Neuropsicólogo. Debido a la duración de la cita y al espacio limitado en nuestra consulta, es mejor que no traiga a otros niños con usted. Si es posible, haga arreglos para el cuidado de sus otros niños.
Ubicación de la Clínica de Neuropsicología
La clínica se encuentra en el Hospital de la UW. Entre por la Entrada de las Clínicas (Clinics Entrance). Necesitará presentarse en el Registro de las Clínicas (Clinics Registration). Éste se encuentra en el Vestíbulo Principal (Main Lobby) en el segundo piso (piso principal). Después acuda al Departamento de Neurodiagnóstico (Neurodiagnostics Department). Aquí se encuentra Neuropsicología. Pase por el vestíbulo de los Elevadores H y vaya hacia el vestíbulo J. Cuando llegue, regístrese con la recepcionista de la Clínica de Neurodiagnóstico.
Antes de la cita de su hijo
Usted recibirá un paquete de información. Incluirá un cuestionario y una lista de comprobación del comportamiento que usted debe rellenar. También incluirá listas del comportamiento a rellenar por el maestro de su hijo. Es importante que rellenen completamente cada uno de estos formularios.
Sea tan preciso como pueda. Envíelos a la clínica una semana antes de la cita de su hijo. El niño debe tomarse sus medicamentos regulares como lo hace todos los días. Tráigalos a la cita de forma que su hijo pueda tomárselos a las horas regulares. Asegúrese de traer sus lentes, audífonos, o cualquier otro dispositivo de asistencia que su hijo use. Es muy importante que el niño duerma bien la noche antes y que consuma un buen desayuno antes de la cita. Si su hijo está enfermo, por favor llame y le haremos otra cita para la evaluación. El seguimiento de estos pasos asegurará que el rendimiento de su hijo sea óptimo.
El Procedimiento
Usted y su hijo se reunirán con el Neuropsicólogo. Durante la entrevista, le hará preguntas sobre los problemas médicos de su hijo, el historial de desarrollo, la educación, y cualquier problema que esté teniendo. Por favor, asegúrese de traer cualquier documento que le ayude a responder estas preguntas. Durante la mayor parte del día, su hijo trabajará uno a uno con el evaluador. La evaluación es muy parecida a los exámenes de la escuela. El niño responderá preguntas, resolverá problemas, y completará tareas con papel y lápiz. No se permite que los padres participen ni observen la evaluación.
Tendrán un descanso para almorzar si la evaluación se alarga hasta la tarde. Podrán tomarse otros descansos si es necesario. Se permitirá que el niño consuma una merienda y bebidas durante la sesión de evaluación. Usted puede traer meriendas de casa o comprarlas en la cafetería.
Los resultados
Una vez que se haya completado la evaluación, el Neuropsicólogo estudiará los resultados. A diferencia de las pruebas de la escuela, el niño no recibirá un “aprobado” o un “suspenso”. La información obtenida a través de estas pruebas ayudará a que el doctor conozca bien los puntos fuertes y los puntos débiles de su hijo. Los resultados serán comparados con los de otros niños de una edad similar. Si el niño ha sido evaluado antes, esas puntuaciones serán comparadas con los resultados nuevos. Entonces el Neuropsicólogo escribirá un informe. Los resultados de la prueba serán enviados a su doctor en 2 a 3 semanas.

Pediatric Neuropsychological Testing
Your doctor has asked that your child have neuropsychological testing. We will test your child’s thinking skills. This can include:
- Problem-solving
- Memory
- Speed of thought
- Attention
- Language
- Academic skills
This testing will give your doctor useful information about your child’s strengths and any problems that may be present.
What to do
Most often, a referral is required by insurance companies. Check with your insurance company to see if the testing is covered. Also, check to see if your doctor sent a referral. Call the Neuropsychology Clinic at 608-263-5430 to schedule an appointment. The staff member who schedules your child will discuss the details of the visit with you.
A parent must come with the child and remain on site for testing. Plan on a half-day visit for children under age 6 and a full-day visit for children age 6 and older. A full-day visit can last 6 hours or a typical school day. The length of the visit depends on the questions asked by your child’s doctor and findings of the Neuropsychologist. Due to the length of the visit and limited space in our office, it is best if you do not bring other children with you. If possible, make other arrangements for your children.
Finding the Neuropsychology Clinic
The clinic is at the UW Hospital. Enter at the Clinics entrance. You will need to stop at Clinics Registration. This is in the Main Lobby on the second (main) floor. From there, you go to the Neurodiagnostics department. Neuropsychology is located here. Go through the H elevator lobby to the J lobby. Check in with the Neurodiagnostics front desk staff once you arrive.
Before Your Child’s Visit
You will receive a packet of information. This will include a questionnaire and behavior checklists for you to fill out. It will also include behavior checklists for your child’s teacher to fill out. It is important that each of these forms be filled out completely. Be as accurate as you can be. Return these to the clinic one week before your child’s visit.
The child should take regular medicines as he or she does each day. Bring these with you so the child can take them at the normal times. Be sure to bring glasses, hearing aids, or any other assistive devices the child uses. It is very important that the child sleeps well the night before the visit and has a good breakfast before the visit. If your child is sick, please call and we will re-schedule the test. Taking these steps will help ensure that your child performs at his or her best.
The Procedure
You and your child will meet with the Neuropsychologist. During the interview, you will be asked about your child’s medical problems, developmental history, education, and any problems he or she is having. Please be sure to bring any paperwork that will help you answer these questions. For most of the day, your child will work one-on-one with a tester. Testing is much like taking tests at school. The child will answer questions, solve problems, and complete pencil and paper tasks. Parents are not allowed to take part in or watch the testing.
There will be a lunch break if testing goes into the afternoon. Other testing breaks are allowed as needed. The child is allowed to have snacks and drinks during the testing session. You may bring snacks from home or buy them in the cafeteria.
Results
Once the testing is complete, the Neuropsychologist will study the results. Unlike the tests for school, the child will not receive a “pass” or “fail” grade. Information gathered from these tests helps the doctor come to know your child’s strengths and weaknesses. The results are compared with the results of other children of a similar age. If the child has been tested before, those scores will be compared to the new results. The Neuropsychologist then writes a report. The test results will be sent to your doctor in 2 to 3 weeks.
