Adult Neuropsychological Testing - Spanish
Existen muchas razones por las que las personas son remitidas para una evaluación neuropsicológica. Es posible que usted haya sufrido una lesión cerebral debido a un accidente o una enfermedad. Su doctor puede estar preocupado por su memoria y otras habilidades cognitivas y que desee entender mejor el porqué. La evaluación también puede ayudarnos a averiguar cómo está sobrellevando una persona sus síntomas médicos o una lesión o enfermedad. La evaluación ayudará a que su doctor le proporcione los mejores cuidados posibles.
Lo que debe hacer
En la mayoría de los casos, las compañías de seguro médico requieren una referencia (referral). Contacte a su compañía de seguro médico para comprobar si cubre el costo de la evaluación. También compruebe que su doctor haya enviado una referencia.
La cita puede durar entre 2 y 6 horas. Eso depende de las preguntas que le haga el doctor y las necesidades identificadas por el Neuropsicólogo. Por favor, informe al personal de la clínica lo antes posible si no puede asistir a su cita. Entonces podremos ofrecérsela a otro paciente. Los pacientes recibirán una factura/cuenta de $75 si no acuden a la cita. También le cobrarán esta tarifa si cancela la cita con menos de 48 horas de antelación. No le cobraremos esta tarifa si tiene una emergencia o si no puede evitar cancelarla.
Tómese sus medicamentos tal como lo hace todos los días. Tráigalos consigo de forma que se los pueda tomar a las horas regulares. Si es necesario, traiga sus lentes para leer y sus audífonos. Si hay un familiar que conoce sus problemas actuales, por favor haga que acuda con usted a la cita.
Dónde y cuándo debe llegar
Por favor, llegue 20 minutos antes de la hora programada para la cita. Necesitará presentarse en el Registro de las Clínicas (Clinics Registration). Éste se encuentra en el Vestíbulo Principal (Main Lobby) en el segundo piso (piso principal). Después acuda al Laboratorio de Neuropsicología (Neuropsychology Laboratory). Pase por el vestíbulo de los Elevadores H y vaya hacia el vestíbulo J. Cuando llegue, regístrese con la recepcionista de la clínica.
El procedimiento
Será recibido por el Neuropsicólogo o el Psicometrista que va a trabajar con usted a lo largo del día. Pasará la mayor parte del día trabajando uno a uno con el Psicometrista. Le hará preguntas sobre su historial médico y cualquier problema que esté teniendo. Puede pedirle que responda preguntas, que lea, escriba, o dibuje. Algunas preguntas pueden parecerle fáciles y otras pueden ser difíciles. Algunas de las pruebas tendrán un límite de tiempo y otras no. Es posible que en algunas pruebas le pida que piense de una forma en la que no está acostumbrado a pensar, o que haga cosas que no ha hecho en mucho tiempo. También es posible que complete medidas que ayudarán al doctor a entender cómo está afectando su enfermedad o lesión a su estado de ánimo, su personalidad, o sus habilidades para sobrellevar las situaciones. Durante las pruebas, pediremos que sus familiares o amigos salgan del cuarto.
Si la evaluación se alarga hasta la tarde, tendrá un descanso para almorzar. Se permitirán otros descansos y meriendas. Puede traer una merienda de su casa o comprarla en la cafetería.
Resultados
Una vez que se haya completado la evaluación, el neuropsicólogo estudiará los resultados. A diferencia de las pruebas que ha tenido en la escuela, no recibirá un “aprobado” o un “suspenso”. La información obtenida a través de estas pruebas ayudará a que el doctor conozca bien sus puntos fuertes y sus puntos débiles. Sus resultados serán comparados con los de personas de su misma edad con antecedentes similares. Si usted ha sido evaluado anteriormente, esas puntuaciones serán comparadas con los resultados nuevos. Entonces el neuropsicólogo escribirá un informe. El informe será enviado a su doctor en 1 a 2 semanas. Por favor, llame a su doctor para obtener los resultados.

Adult Neuropsychological Testing
There are many reasons why people are referred for neuropsychological testing. You may have had an injury to the brain caused by an accident or an illness. Your doctor may be concerned about your memory or other thinking skills and wishes to understand them better. Testing can also help us to find out how a person is coping with medical symptoms or with an injury or illness. Testing will help your doctor to provide you with the best possible care.
What to Do
Most often, a referral is required by insurance companies. Check with your insurance company to see if the testing is covered. Also check to see if your doctor has sent a referral.
The visit can last from 2 – 6 hours. This depends on the questions asked by your doctor and the needs found by the Neuropsychologist. Please let the clinic know as soon as you can if you are not able to keep your appointment. We are then able to offer the appointment to other patients. Patients will be charged a fee of $75 for missed appointments. This fee will also be charged if you give us less than 48 hours notice that you are not able to come. This fee may not be charged if you have an emergency or cannot avoid canceling.
Take any medicine as you do each day. Bring these with you so that you can take them at the normal times. Bring glasses for reading and a hearing aid if needed. If you have a family member who knows your current issues, please bring him or her with you.
Where and When to Arrive
Please arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled visit. You will need to report to Clinics Registration. This is in the Main Lobby on the second (main) floor. From there, you go to the Neuropsychology Laboratory. Go through the H elevator lobby to the J lobby. Check in with the front desk of the clinic once you arrive.
The Procedure
You will be greeted by either the Neuropsychologist or the Psychometrist who you will be working with you throughout the day. Most of your day will be spent one on one with the Psychometrist. You will be asked about your medical history and any problems you may be having. You may be asked to answer questions, read, write, or draw. Some tests may seem easy and others may be hard. Some of the tests will be timed. Others will not. Some tests may ask you to think in a way that you are not used to thinking, or to do things that you haven't done in a long time. You may also complete measures that will help the doctor understand how your illness or injury affects your mood, your personality, or your coping skills. During the tests, your family members or friends will be asked to leave the room.
There will be a lunch break if testing goes into the afternoon. Other testing breaks and snacks are allowed. You can bring snacks from home or buy them in the cafeteria.
Results
Once the testing is complete, the neuropsychologist will study the results. Unlike the tests you have taken in school, you will not receive a “pass” or “fail” grade. Information gathered from these tests helps the doctor come to know your strengths and weaknesses. Your results are compared with the results of people the same age who have a similar background. If you’ve been tested before, those scores will be compared to the new results. The Neuropsychologist then writes a report. The report will be sent to your doctor in 1 to 2 weeks.
