Getting Ready for Flexible Sigmoidoscopy with Sedation (Spanish)
¿Qué es una Sigmoidoscopia Flexible?
Una sigmoidoscopia flexible es una prueba realizada para examinar la parte inferior del intestino grueso. Esta prueba puede ser utilizada para averiguar la causa del sangrado rectal o del dolor abdominal.

La preparación
1. 7 días antes, debe dejar de tomar el anticoagulante Effient® (prasugrel).
2. 5 días antes, debe dejar de tomar:
- Hierro.
- Anticoagulantes, tal como Coumadin® (warfarina) o Plavix® (clopidogrel).
3. 2 días antes, debe dejar de tomar el anticoagulante Pradaxa® (dabigatrán).
Nunca debe dejar de tomar pastillas anticoagulantes sin antes hablar con el doctor que se las ha recetado. El doctor le dará instrucciones sobre cómo hacerlo de forma segura. Contáctenos si tiene preguntas.
4. Los medicamentos para la diabetes (orales e insulina) tendrán que se ajustados mientras no esté comiendo como lo hace normalmente. Por favor, hable de esto con su doctor de cabecera.
5. Debe tener un adulto responsable disponible para llevarle a casa o su procedimiento será cancelado. Puede tomar un taxi o un autobús para ir a casa pero únicamente si va acompañado de un adulto responsable aparte del conductor.
6. Planee de antemano. Usted recibirá sedantes para realizar la prueba, los cuales pueden afectar mucho su juicio. El día de la prueba, no podrá manejar ni regresar al trabajo. No tome decisiones personales o de negocios importantes hasta el dia siguiente.
7. Nuestro personal tendrá que revisar su historial médico, las cirugías previas, las alergias, y los medicamentos que ha tomado. Por favor, traiga esta información con Usted.
8. Si usa una máquina de CPAP o BiPAP para la apnea de sueño, por favor tráigala con Usted. Necesitamos tener la máquina disponible para sedarle de forma segura.
9. Si tiene un marcapasos o desfibrilador implantado, necesitaremos recibir información específica sobre el mismo antes del día de su procedimiento. Si aún no nos ha proporcionado esta información, por favor llámenos durante las horas regulares de servicio (8:00 AM a 5:00 PM, de lunes a viernes) al (608) 263-8097. El día de la sigmoidoscopia flexible
1. No consuma alimentos sólidos, leche, ni productos lácteos hasta después de la prueba.
2. Puede consumir líquidos transparentes (p. ej.: agua, jugo de manzana, soda, Gatorade®) hasta 4 horas antes de su llegada. Evite consumir líquidos rojos.
3. Tome sus medicamentos regulares con un pequeño sorbo de líquido transparente hasta 1 hora antes de su llegada. No tome los medicamentos mencionados en el apartado de “La Preparación.”
4. Siga las instrucciones de llegada y registro incluidas en su carta de presentación. Si va a llegar con retraso, llámenos al (608)263-8094 para informarnos. Si llega con más de 30 minutos de retraso, es posible que tengamos que cancelar la cita y hacerle otra. Hacemos todo lo posible por ser puntuales.
5. Planee estar aquí durante aproximadamente 2 horas. La persona que le vaya a llevar a casa debe estar disponible en nuestra sala de espera o por teléfono.
La sigmoidoscopia flexible
Una enfermera revisara su historial médico y le colocará una línea intravenosa. Ésta será utilizada durante el procedimiento para administrarle la sedación. Le administrarán 2 enemas pequeños. La prueba durará de 15 a 30 minutos. Entonces será llevado a nuestra Sala de Recuperación, donde permanecerá durante aproximadamente una hora. La persona que le vaya a llevar a casa puede estar allí con Usted. Una vez que se despierte, le darán algo de beber. Su doctor hablará con Usted sobre los resultados antes de la dada de alta. Usted y el doctor que le refirió para la prueba recibirán una copia del informe.
Después de la sigmoidoscopia flexible y durante el resto del día
▪ No regrese al trabajo.
▪ No maneje.
▪ No use maquinaria peligrosa.
▪ No tome ninguna decisión importante.
▪ Planee descansar una vez que se marche del hospital.
▪ No consuma alcohol.
Debería ser capaz de reanudar sus tareas cotidianas normales el día después del procedimiento. Es posible que tenga cierto dolor de gas debido al aire utilizado para dilatarle el colon. El dolor debería ir desapareciendo a medida que expulse el gas.

What is a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a test to look at the lower part of your large bowel. This test can be used to find the cause of rectal bleeding or abdominal pain.
Important – Read 1 week in advance.
Procedure may be cancelled if instructions are not followed
Getting Ready
1. 7 days before, you should stop taking the blood thinner Effient® (prasugrel).
2. 5 days before, you should stop taking:
- Iron.
- Blood thinners, such as Coumadin® (warfarin) or Plavix® (clopidogrel).
3. 2 days before, you should stop taking the blood thinner Pradaxa® (dabigatran). Blood thinning pills should never be stopped without discussing this with the doctor who prescribes it for you. The doctor will give you instructions on how to safely do this. Contact us if you have questions.
4. Diabetic medicines (oral and insulin) will need to be adjusted for the time you’re not eating as normal. Please discuss this with your primary doctor.
5. You must have a responsible adult to drive you home or your procedure will be cancelled. You may take a cab or bus home only if you have a responsible adult with you other than the driver.
6. Plan ahead. For your test you will be given sedatives which can greatly affect your judgment. On the day of your test, you will not be able to drive or return to work.
7. Our staff will need to review your health history, prior surgeries, allergies, and medicines taken. Please bring this information with you.
8. If you use CPAP or BiPAP for sleep apnea, please bring it with you. We will need your machine in order to sedate you safely.
9. If you have an implanted pacemaker or defibrillator, we will need specific information about it before your procedure day. If you haven't already given us this information, please call us during business hours (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday) at (608) 263-8097. Ask to speak to the Procedure Coordinator.
Day of the Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
1. No solid food, milk, or dairy products until after your test.
2. You may drink clear liquids until 4 hours before you arrive (ie: water, apple juice, soda, Gatorade®). Avoid red liquids.
3. Take your normal medicines with a small sip of clear liquid up to 1 hour before you arrive. Do not take medicines mentioned under “Getting Ready.”
4. Follow the arrival and registration instructions in your cover letter. If you are delayed, call us at (608)263-8094 to let us know you are going to be late. If you are over 30 minutes late, we may have to cancel and reschedule. We do our best to stay on time.
5. Plan to be with us about 2 hours. Your driver will need to be available in our waiting room or by phone.
The Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
A nurse will review your health history and place an IV. The IV is used for sedation during your procedure. You will be given 2 small enemas. The test will take 15 – 30 minutes. You will then go to our Recovery Room for about an hour. Your driver may sit with you there. Once awake, you will be given something to drink. Your doctor will discuss results with you before discharge. You and the doctor who referred you will receive a copy of the report.
After the Flexible Sigmoidoscopy and for the Rest of the Day
▪ Do not return to work.
▪ Do not drive.
▪ Do not use hazardous machinery.
▪ Do not make any important decisions.
▪ Plan to rest after you leave the hospital.
▪ Do not drink alcohol.
You should be able to resume normal daily tasks on the day after your procedure.
You may have some gas pains from the air used to distend your colon. As you pass the air your gas pains should go away.
