Preparation guide for a successful pin removal appointment
(To be given out at visit before pin pull or upon discharge from hospital)
Step 1
Bring a dose of pain medicine with you. Give it to your child while you are waiting.
Step 2
The cast will be cut with a cast saw. This saw is just for cutting casts and will not cut your skin.
Step 3
X-Rays will be taken of the bone that was broken.
Step 4
Pins will be removed.
Step 5
A splint will be placed for protection and comfort. In some cases your cast may be used to make this splint.
Extra Tips
- Wait times vary, bring something to do with you.
- Bring a comfort item if you would like. (blanket, bear)
- A child life specialist may be available to help with distraction during this procedure. Ask your nurse to page one.
