Electroencefalograma (EEG)
Su doctor ha ordenado la realización de un electroencefalograma (EEG) para ayudar a encontrar la causa de sus síntomas y decidir cuál es el mejor tratamiento para usted. Por favor, si tiene preguntas, asegúrese de hacérselas a su doctor o enfermera.
¿Qué es un electroencefalograma?
Un electroencefalograma es una grabación de la actividad eléctrica del cerebro que ayuda a su doctor a diagnosticar una variedad de problemas neurológicos, desde el dolor de cabeza común y el mareo, hasta los trastornos de convulsiones, los derrames cerebrales, y las enfermedades cerebrales degenerativas.
No es doloroso, y no debería sufrir ningún efecto debido al mismo. La prueba durará aproximadamente una hora. Si viene a nuestra clínica, podrá marcharse enseguida después de la prueba.
Preparación para su electroencefalograma
Si usted está ingresado, un técnico de electroencefalogramas realizará el estudio en su cuarto. No se necesita ninguna preparación especial.
Si usted viene como paciente ambulatorio
- Su cabello DEBE estar limpio cuando realicen la prueba. Láveselo la noche antes o la mañana de la prueba. No se ponga suavizante, geles, o esprays.
- Puede comer y tomar cualquier medicamento necesario antes de su prueba.
- Si su hijo va a tener la prueba, traiga un juguete, libro o cobija especial para él. Esto le mantendrá tranquilo durante prueba. Le pediremos que permanezca con su hijo durante la prueba.
Llegada para su electroencefalograma
De nuevo, si usted está ingresado, un técnico de electroencefalogramas realizará el estudio en su cuarto.
Para los pacientes ambulatorios
Hay voluntarios en el mostrador principal que pueden indicarle cómo llegar. Su cita de electroencefalograma se realizará en el Laboratorio de EEG, módulo B en el 2o piso. Debe acudir al Registro 15 minutos antes de su cita programada. El Registro está en el piso principal a medida que se dirige de la “Calle Principal” (Main Street) al Laboratorio de EEG en el módulo B. Siga la “Calle Principal’ hacia el módulo B y el Registro estará a su izquierda. Después de registrarse, siga hacia la izquierda en la “Calle Principal”, pase por el vestíbulo de los elevadores B y vaya por el corredor B hasta la puerta que tiene la señal de “Medical Specialty Clinics” (Clínicas de Especialidades Médicas). Por favor, regístrese en el mostrador de recepción de Alergia (Allergy)/EEG”.
El procedimiento
En el laboratorio de EEG, un técnico le colocará discos de metal muy pequeños en el cuero cabelludo usando un pegamento especial. Los discos serán colocados en lugares pre-medidos en su cuero cabelludo. Se colocará un gel (gel de sal) en cada disco. Este gel permite que registremos sus ondas cerebrales.
Una vez que comience la prueba, es vital que se relaje y se siente o se acueste tranquilamente. Durante la prueba, es posible que se realicen un número de procedimientos especiales. Por ejemplo, es posible que vea una luz intermitente y puede ser que le pidan que respire profundamente durante un breve período de tiempo. Al final de la prueba, el técnico removerá los discos de metal y el pegamento. Él o ella le explicará cómo remover el pegamento que le quede en el cuero cabelludo. Si usted está ingresado, también le proporcionaremos esta información a su enfermera.
Resultados
Para pacientes ingresados

Para pacientes ambulatorios

Your doctor has ordered an EEG for you to help find the cause of your symptoms and decide the best treatment for you. If you have any questions, please be sure to ask your doctor or nurse.
What Is an EEG?
An EEG is a recording of the electrical activity of the brain that helps your physician diagnose a variety of neurological problems, from common headaches and dizziness to seizure disorders, strokes and degenerative brain disease.
It is not painful, and you should feel no ill effects from it. The test will take about an hour. If you came to our clinic, you can leave right away after the test.
Preparing for your EEG
If you are an inpatient, an EEG technologist will perform the study at your bedside. No special preparation needs to be taken.
If you are an outpatient
- Your hair MUST be clean for this test. Wash it the night before or the morning of your test. Do not apply conditioners, gels, or sprays.
- You may eat and take any needed medicine before your test.
- If your child is having the test, bring a special toy, book, or blanket for them. This will help keep them calm during the test. You will be asked to stay with your child during the test.
Arriving for your EEG
Again, if you are an inpatient, an EEG technologist will perform the study at your bedside.
For outpatients
There are volunteers at the main desk who can direct you. Your EEG appointment is in the EEG lab, B module/2nd floor. You must stop and register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Registration is on the main floor as you make your way on ‘Main Street’ to the EEG lab in the B module. Follow ‘Main Street’ towards the B module and Registration will be on your left hand side. After registration, continue left on ‘Main Street’ through the B elevator lobby and on down the B corridor to the doorway marked “Medical Specialty Clinics”. Please check in at the Allergy/ EEG desk.
The Procedure
In the EEG lab, a technologist will place very small metal discs on your scalp using special glue. The discs will be placed at pre-measured spots on your scalp. A gel (salt jelly) will be put on each disc. This gel allows us to pick up your brain waves.
Once the test begins, it is vital that you relax and sit or lay quietly. During the test, a number of special procedures may be done. For instance, you may see a flashing light and you may be asked to breathe deeply for a short time. At the end of the test, the technologist will remove the metal discs and glue. He or she will explain how to remove any glue that may remain on your scalp. If you are an inpatient, we will also give this information to your nurse.
Results
For inpatients
Your doctor will discuss the results of the test with you and recommend treatment, if needed, prior to your going home.
For outpatients
The final report on your EEG will be sent to your primary doctor within a few days. He or she will discuss the results of the test with you and recommend treatment, if needed.
