Electroencefalograma (EEG) con privación del sueño
Su doctor ha ordenado que tenga un Electroencefalograma (EEG) con privación del sueño. Un electroencefalograma registra la actividad eléctrica del cerebro. Este tipo especial de EEG puede ayudar a proporcionar a su doctor información útil relacionada con su problema. Es como un electroencefalograma de rutina excepto que usted debe permanecer despierto desde la medianoche la noche antes de la prueba. Si tiene alguna pregunta sobre la prueba, por favor asegúrese de hacérsela a su doctor o enfermera.
Lo que debe hacer
- Permanezca despierto desde la medianoche hasta la hora de su electroencefalograma.
- Puede comer, pero no consuma cafeína después de la medianoche antes de la prueba (no puede consumir café, té, cola, etc.).
- Si está tomando algún medicamento recetado, tal como medicamentos antiepilépticos, tómeselos como lo hace normalmente.
- Si usted es un paciente ambulatorio, haga que alguien le traiga al hospital y le lleve a casa. Es posible que tenga mucho sueño después de la prueba.
Llegada para su electroencefalograma
- Hay voluntarios en el mostrador principal que pueden indicarle cómo llegar.
- Su cita de electroencefalograma se realizará en el Laboratorio de Electroencefalograma (EEG lab), módulo J en el 2o piso.
- Debe acudir al registro 15 minutos antes de su cita programada. El Registro está en el piso principal a medida que se dirige de la ‘Calle Principal’ (Main Street) al Laboratorio de EEG en el módulo J. Siga la ‘Calle Principal’ hacia el módulo J y el Registro estará a su derecha. Después de registrarse, siga hacia la derecha en la ‘Calle Principal’, pase por el vestíbulo de los elevadores H y vaya al vestíbulo J. Por favor, regístrese en el mostrador de recepción de EEG.
El procedimiento
Una vez que esté en el Laboratorio de Electroencefalograma, un técnico le colocará pequeños discos en el cuero cabelludo usando un pegamento especial. Los discos serán colocados en lugares determinados. Una vez que comience la prueba, es importante que se relaje. Aunque quizás esté dormido durante una porción del procedimiento, es posible que también le enseñen una luz intermitente o que le pidan que respire profundamente durante un período breve de tiempo. La prueba durará aproximadamente una hora y media. Al final de la prueba, se removerán los discos de metal y el pegamento. El personal le explicará cómo remover el pegamento que haya quedado en el cuero cabelludo.
Resultados

Sleep Deprived EEG
Your doctor has ordered a sleep-deprived EEG for you. An EEG records the electrical activity of the brain. This special type of EEG may help give your doctor useful information about your problem. It is like the routine EEG except that you must stay awake from midnight the night before the test If you have any questions about the test, please be sure to ask your doctor or nurse.
What to Do
- Stay awake from midnight until the time of your EEG.
- You may eat, but do not drink any caffeine after midnight before the test (no coffee, tea, cola, etc.).
- If you are on prescribed medicine, such as anti-epileptic drugs, take them as usual.
- If you are an outpatient, have someone drive you to the hospital and home again. You may be very sleepy after the test.
Arriving for the EEG
- There are volunteers at the main desk who can direct you.
- Your EEG appointment is in the EEG lab, J module/2nd floor.
- You must stop and register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Registration is on the main floor as you make your way on ‘Main Street’ to the EEG lab in the J module. Follow ‘Main Street’ towards the J module. Registration will be on your right hand side. After registration, continue right on ‘Main Street’ through the H elevator lobby to the J lobby. Please check in at the EEG desk.
The Procedure
Once in the EEG lab, a technologist will place small metal discs on your scalp using special glue. The discs will be placed at certain locations. Once the test begins, it is important that you relax. Though you will be sleeping during a portion of the procedure, you may also be shown a flashing light or asked to breathe deeply for a short time. The test will take about one and a half hours. At the end of the test, the metal discs and glue will be removed. The staff will explain how to remove any glue that may remain on your scalp.
Results
The results will be sent to your doctor in 1 to 2 days. Please call your doctor for the results and discuss any questions you may have.
