Para llegar al Laboratorio de Electroencefalogramas (EEG), tome la Calle Principal (Main Street) en el 2^o piso hacia el módulo B.  Tome el pasillo izquierdo y camine hasta llegar al mostrador de Alergia (Allergy)/EEG y regístrese.

 

Si ésta es la primera visita de su hijo al Hospital y las Clínicas de la Universidad de Wisconsin, por favor venga con tiempo extra para registrarse.  Hay voluntarios en el mostrador principal que pueden indicarle cómo llegar.  Su cita de EEG se realizará en el Laboratorio de EEG, módulo B/ 2^o piso.  Debe presentarse en el Registro 15 minutos antes de su cita programada.  El Registro está en el piso principal a medida que se dirige de la Calle Principal (Main Street) al Laboratorio de EEG en el módulo B.  Siga la Calle Principal hacia el módulo B y el Registro estará a su izquierda.  Después de registrarse, siga hacia la izquierda en la Calle Principal, pase por el vestíbulo de los elevadores B y vaya por el corredor B hasta la puerta que tiene la señal de Clínicas de Especialidades Médicas (Medical Specialty Clinics).  Por favor, regístrese en el mostrador de Alergia (Allergy)/EEG.

 

Esta prueba nos ayudará a averiguar más sobre el tipo de convulsiones o eventos que su hijo puede estar teniendo.  Durante la prueba, se grabarán las acciones y comportamientos de su hijo con una cámara.  Esto se hace junto al registro de la actividad de las ondas cerebrales de su hijo con un electroencefalograma.  A veces, hay movimientos que pueden parecer convulsiones, pero no lo son.  Si su hijo tiene convulsiones, este estudio nos ayudará a saber cuán fuertes son y con cuánta frecuencia se producen.  También nos ayudará a averiguar de qué parte del cerebro proceden las convulsiones.

 

Esta prueba también nos ayudará a decidir si su hijo está teniendo convulsiones silenciosas.  Se trata de convulsiones que se producen sin ninguna señal física.  Con este tipo de convulsiones se pueden ver cambios en el electroencefalograma.

 

La prueba no produce dolor.  No se administrarán inyecciones ni se usarán medicamentos especiales.  Se colocarán pequeños discos de metal en el cuero cabelludo de su hijo.  Le moverán el cabello de forma que no estorbe.  Estos discos se sujetarán en su lugar usando un pegamento especial, hecho justamente para esta prueba.

 

Se colocará un gel (gel de sal) en cada disco.  El gel nos permite registrar las ondas cerebrales de su hijo.  Le envolveremos la cabeza y los cables con una venda de gasa para tenerlos asegurados durante el resto del día.

 

El tiempo necesario para un Video-EEG como paciente ambulatorio puede variar de 2 a 8 horas.

 

• Intente llegar 15 minutos antes de la hora programada para la prueba.
• Usted y su hijo se encontrarán en un cuarto grande y cómodo durante el resto del día.  En el cuarto tendrán una televisión/video/máquina de DVD junto a un Play Station para juegos.
• Le pedirán a usted y a su hijo que permanezcan en este cuarto durante la totalidad de la prueba exceptuando cuando use el baño, el cual se encuentra justo fuera del cuarto.  Un adulto debe estar con su hijo en todo momento.
• Por favor, traiga con usted artículos para mantenerles a usted y a su hijo ocupados, tal como libros, crucigramas, rompecabezas, películas, videos, y ese tipo de cosas. El cabello de su hijo debe estar limpio para realizar esta prueba.  Láveselo la noche antes o la mañana de la prueba y no le ponga suavizante, geles ni esprays.
• Si la prueba se ordena con ‘Privación del Sueño’, intente mantener a su hijo despierto tan tarde como pueda la noche antes.  Vea el Health Facts – Electroencefalograma con privación del sueño.
• Puede comprar comida en la cafetería o traer sus propias meriendas/snacks de casa.
• Cuando se complete la prueba, se removerán los discos con un aceite de base mineral.  El cabello de su hijo estará un tanto grasiento cuando se marchen.  Puede limpiarse con champú.  Usted puede elegir que le remuevan los discos con quitaesmalte para evitar el problema del cabello grasiento.  El quitaesmalte tiene un olor fuerte.  No lo usaremos a menos que lo pida.

 

Después del procedimiento

 

Los informes completos de la prueba casi siempre están listos en 2 semanas.  Usted puede recibir los resultados por teléfono o durante una visita futura.

 

Seguro médico

 

Es posible que esta prueba requiera una pre-autorización de su compañía de seguro médico.  No todas las compañías de seguro médico pagan el costo de esta prueba.  Por favor, llame a su seguro médico para averiguar si cubre el costo de esta prueba.  Quizás también necesite una referencia (referral) de su doctor primario.  Si es así, pídasela a su doctor primario y envíela a su compañía de seguro médico.  Necesitará hacerlo lo antes posible.  Con frecuencia, se tarda entre 2 a 4 semanas en averiguar si hay o no cobertura.  La compañía de seguro médico le contactará una vez que tomen su decisión.  Debido a que este proceso puede ser muy complejo, no dude en contactar al mostrador de los HMOs llamando al (608) 263-8773 si tiene preguntas o necesita ayuda con su seguro médico.

To get to the EEG Lab, take Main Street on the 2^nd floor to the B module.  Take the left hallway all the way down to the Allergy/EEG desk and check in.

 

If this is your child’s first visit to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, please allow extra time to register.  There are volunteers at the main desk who can direct you.  Your EEG appointment is in the EEG lab, B module/ 2^nd floor.  You must stop and register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.  Registration is on the main floor as you make your way on ‘Main Street’ to the EEG lab in the B module.  Follow ‘Main Street’ towards the B module and Registration will be on your left hand side.  After registration, continue left on ‘Main Street’ through the B elevator lobby and on down the B corridor to the doorway marked ‘Medical Specialty Clinic’.  Please check in at the Allergy/EEG desk.

 

This test helps us to find out more about the kind of seizures or events your child may be having.  During the test, your child’s actions and behaviors are recorded by a camera.  This is paired with an EEG recording of your child’s brain wave activity.  Sometimes, movements may look like seizures, but they are not.  If your child has seizures, this study will help us learn how strong they are and how often they occur.  It will also help us find out what part of the brain the seizures are coming from.

 

This test will also help us decide if your child is having silent seizures.  These are seizures that occur without any physical signs.  Changes can be seen on the EEG with this type of seizure.

 

The test is painless.  There will not be any shots or special medicines used.  Small metal disks will be placed on your child’s scalp.  Your child’s hair will be moved out of the way.  These disks will be held in place using special glue, made just for this test.

 

A gel (salt jelly) will be placed in each disk.  The gel allows us to pick up your child’s brainwaves.  We will wrap your head and the wires with a gauze bandage to keep them secure for the day.

 

The time needed for an outpatient video EEG may be from 2 to 8 hours.

 

• Try to arrive 15 minutes before scheduled test time.
• You and your child will be in a large, comfortable room for the day.  There will be a TV/VCR/DVD along with a Play Station for games in the room.
• You and your child will be asked to stay in this room for as long as the test takes except to use the restroom which is just outside the room.  An adult must be with your child at all times.
• Please bring with you any items to keep you and your child busy such as books, cross word puzzles, movies, videos, and other such things. 
• Your child’s hair must be clean for this test.  Wash it the night before or in the morning and do not apply a lot of conditioners, gels, or sprays.
• If the test is ordered as ‘Sleep Deprived’, try to keep your child up as late as you can the night before.  See the Health Facts for Sleep Deprived EEG #4207.
• You may purchase food items from the cafeteria or you can bring your own snacks from home.
• When the test is complete, the disks will be removed with a mineral-oil based remover. Your child’s hair will be somewhat oily when you leave.  This will shampoo out.  You may choose to have the disks removed with nail polish remover to avoid the problem of oily hair.  This has a strong odor.  We will not use it unless you ask for it.

 

After the Procedure

 

Full test reports are almost always ready in 2 weeks.  Results may be given over the phone or at a later visit.

 

Insurance

 

This test may require pre-authorization from your insurance company.  Not all insurance companies will pay for this.  Please call your insurance to find out if this test is covered.  You may also need a referral from your primary doctor.  If so, ask your primary doctor for this and send it to the insurance company.  This will need to be done as soon as possible.  It often takes 2-4 weeks to find out about coverage.  The insurance company will contact you after they make their decision.  Because this process can be very complex, feel free to contact the HMO desk at (608) 263-8773, if you have any question or need help with your insurance.
