 TheraPEP
 

El TheraPEP es un tratamiento que ayuda a remover mucosa de los pulmones.  También mejora cómo funcionan los broncodilatadores nebulizados.  Un broncodilatador es un medicamento que ayuda a relajar los músculos lisos de los pulmones para facilitar la respiración.  También puede prevenir el colapso pulmonar o abrir áreas que se hayan colapsado.

 

 

 

 

Cómo realizar un tratamiento con el TheraPEP

1. Asegúrese de que el indicador esté colocado en la escala correcta ordenada por su doctor.
2. Siéntese con los codos sobre la mesa o siéntese derecho.
3. Cierre la boca apretadamente alrededor de la boquilla.  Si está usando una máscara, colóquesela apretadamente sobre la nariz y la boca.
4. Respire profundamente por la nariz. 
5. Aguante la respiración durante 2 a 3 segundos.  Esto permite que el aire se mueva a lo largo de los pulmones.
6. Espire (exhale) dentro del TheraPEP.  Mantenga las mejillas duras y planas durante la espiración.
7. Cuando espire, sentirá resistencia.  Se trata de la presión positiva en sus vías respiratorias.
8. Debe espirar de 3 a 4 veces siempre que inspire.
9. Repita los pasos anteriores hasta que haya respirado 20 veces a través del TheraPEP.
10. Remueva la boquilla y tosa "resoplando".  Esto se hace respirando profundamente y aguantando la respiración durante 1 a 3 segundos.  Entonces fuerce el aire fuera de los pulmones con la boca abierta como haría si estuviese intentando empañar un espejo.
11. Siga los pasos del 2 a 10 para un total de _______ minutos siguiendo lo indicado por su doctor.
12. Nota: Es muy importante que tome su tiempo a medida que espira en el aparato TheraPEP.  Haga una pausa durante unos segundos entre las respiraciones.  Si se siente mareado o le entra dolor de cabeza mientras usa el TheraPEP, es posible que esté respirando demasiado rápido.  Si tiene estos síntomas, deje de usar el TheraPEP durante unos minutos y respire normal.  Cuando empiece a usar el TheraPEP de nuevo, espere más tiempo entre las respiraciones.
13. Su doctor ha ordenado la terapia ______ veces al día en el nivel ________.
    

Uso del TheraPEP con su nebulizador

 

Puede usar el TheraPEP al mismo tiempo que realiza el tratamiento con el nebulizador.  Siga la imagen de abajo para ver cómo distribuir las partes.

 

 

 

Limpieza del TheraPEP

 

Debe limpiar el TheraPEP dos veces a la semana o con más frecuencia si está sucio. 

 

1. Desmonte el TheraPEP y ponga todas las piezas en remojo durante cinco minutos en agua tibia con jabón excepto el tubo y el "indicador azul". 
2. Enjuague todas las partes con agua caliente de la llave.  Entonces colóquelas en un cuenco con suficiente alcohol de fricciones (alcohol isopropílico) para cubrir el TheraPEP.  Ponga el TheraPEP en remojo en alcohol durante cinco minutos.
3. Saque el TheraPEP del alcohol y enjuáguelo con agua estéril.  No use agua de la llave, agua embotellada, ni agua destilada.  Puede esterilizar agua hirviéndola durante 5 minutos.  Use esta agua una vez y deséchela.
4. Coloque todas las partes sobre una toalla de papel y permita que se sequen.
   

Limpieza de su nebulizador

TheraPEP

 

TheraPEP is a treatment that helps to remove mucus from the lungs.  It also improves how nebulized bronchodilators work.  A bronchodilator is a drug that helps to relax the smooth muscles in the lungs to make breathing easier.  It can also prevent lung collapse or open up areas that have collapsed.

 

 

 

How to do a TheraPEP Treatment

 

1. Make sure that the dial is set to the correct range ordered by your doctor.
2. Sit with your elbows resting on the table or sit upright.
3. Make a tight seal around the mouthpiece with your mouth.  If you are using a mask, apply the mask tightly over your nose and mouth.
4. Take a deep breath in through your nose. 
5. Hold your breath for 2-3 seconds.  This allows the air to move through the lungs.
6. Breathe out slowly with force into the TheraPEP.  Keep your cheeks hard and flat while you are breathing out.
7. During the time that you are breathing out, you will feel resistance.  This is positive pressure in your airways.
8. You should breathe out 3-4 times as long as you breathe in.
9. Repeat the steps above until you have blown through the TheraPEP 20 times..
10. Remove the mouthpiece and perform a “huff cough”.  This is done by taking a deep breath and holding it for 1-3 seconds.  Then force the air out of your lungs with your mouth open like you would do if you were trying to fog a mirror.
11. Continue steps 2-10 for a total of _______ minutes as ordered by your doctor.
12. Note:  It is vital to pace yourself as you breathe out into the TheraPEP device.  Pause for a few seconds between breaths.  If you feel dizzy or get a headache while using the TheraPEP, you may be breathing too fast.  If you get these symptoms, stop using the TheraPEP for a few minutes and breathe as normal.  When you begin to use the TheraPEP again, take more time between breaths.
13. Your doctor has ordered the therapy ______ times per day at setting level________.

Using the TheraPEP with Your Nebulizer

 

Your TheraPEP can be used at the same time you are doing your nebulizer treatment.  Follow the set-up picture below.

 

Cleaning the TheraPEP

 

The TheraPEP should be cleaned twice weekly or more often if it is soiled. 

 

1. Take the TheraPEP apart and soak all of the pieces except the tubing and “blue indicator column” in warm soapy water for five minutes.
2. Rinse all of the parts with hot tap water.  Then place them in a bowl with enough rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) to cover the TheraPEP.  Soak the TheraPEP device in alcohol for five minutes.
3. Remove the TheraPEP from the alcohol and rinse with sterile water.  Do not use water from the faucet, bottled or distilled water.  You can make water sterile by boiling it for 5 minutes.  Use this water once, then throw it out.
4. Place all of the parts on a paper towel to dry.

 

Cleaning your Nebulizer

 

If you are using the TheraPEP with a nebulizer, please clean the nebulizer at the same time that you clean your TheraPEP.  Please refer to the Small Volume Nebulizer Health Facts for You #4228 for cleaning guidelines.

 

Return Clinic Appointments

 

Please bring your TheraPEP with you to clinic visits.
