Breast Biopsy-Care at Home

Biopsia del seno Sus cuidados en casa

 

Este folleto fue escrito para ayudarle a prepararse para su biopsia y para planear su recuperación en casa. Somos conscientes de que éste es un momento difícil para usted y su familia. Esperamos que esta información le sea de utilidad y le invitamos a que haga preguntas. Si tiene alguna pregunta o preocupación después de irse a casa, por favor llame al Centro de cuidados del seno al (608) 266-6400, de lunes a viernes, de 8:00 AM a 4:30 PM.  Después de las horas regulares, por la noche o durante el fin de semana, por favor llame al (608) 262-0486.  Esto le pondrá en contacto con el operador del hospital. Pregunte por el doctor que está de guardia con el Dr. ________________________.  Proporcione al operador su nombre y número de teléfono con el código del área. El doctor le devolverá la llamada.

Resultados de la biopsia

 

Sabemos que puede ser difícil esperar los resultados de su biopsia. Su cirujano o enfermera especializada le llamará por teléfono o le pedirá que regrese a la clínica para discutir los resultados.

 

El cuidado de la incisión

 

Quizás tenga un vendaje sobre el área de la biopsia. Deje el vendaje puesto por _________horas. Después, quítese el vendaje. Mire la incisión diariamente. Si nota alguno de los siguientes signos de infección, llame a su doctor:

 

  • Temperatura superior a 100°F en 2 lecturas consecutivas tomadas con 4 horas de diferencia
  • Inflamación o firmeza significativas, o aumento del calor en el área
  • Aumento del enrojecimiento
  • Pus alrededor de la incisión
  • Sangrado abundante de la incisión

 

Después de eso no necesita poner un vendaje sobre la incisión. Sin embargo, puede colocar una gasa entre el área de la incisión y el sostén/brasier si esto le hace sentirse más cómoda. El uso de un sostén con soporte (sin alambres) después de la cirugía proporcionará apoyo a la incisión y quizás disminuya la molestia.

 

Quizás tenga pequeñas tiras de cinta adhesiva blanca (Steri-strips®) sobre la incisión. Empezarán a despegarse en aproximadamente 5 a 7 días. Mantenga la incisión completamente seca por _______horas / días. Puede ducharse si cubre la incisión con un trozo de envoltura de plástico, manteniéndolo en sus sitio con cinta adhesiva. Podrá ducharse como lo hace normalmente después de ________horas / días. No se ponga en remojo en la tina ni nade hasta que la incisión haya cicatrizado completamente, normalmente en 7 a 10 días.

 

Actividad

 

Planee en descansar después de irse a casa. Usted ha recibido medicina de sedación (hace que esté soñolienta), por lo tanto no debería conducir, beber alcohol, ni tomar decisiones personales importantes. Además, no beba alcohol ni conduzca si está tomando medicamento para el dolor con receta médica. Puede regresar al trabajo al día siguiente a menos que se requiera trabajo físico pesado. Pregúntele a su doctor si tiene preocupaciones sobre sus actividades.

 

Medicamento para el dolor

 

Para la molestia leve, quizás se le alivie el dolor al tomar dos pastillas de Extra-Strength Tylenol®(Acetaminofén) cada seis horas. No tome más de ocho pastillas de Extra-Strength Tylenol®en un período de 24 horas. Si tiene dolor intenso, quizás se le proporcione una receta médica para un narcótico.

 

Auto-exámenes del seno

 

Es importante que usted realice una meticulosa auto-exámenes del seno cada mes. Quizás sienta un área firme sobre el lugar donde se realizó la biopsia, la cual se ablandará con el tiempo. La incisión tendrá una apariencia rosada, y la piel que le rodea quizás se vea amoratada por unas semanas. Puede tener cierto adormecimiento alrededor del área de la incisión. La sensación normal regresará probablemente en un par de meses. Si descubre un nuevo bulto o si nota otros cambios, por favor vea a su doctor rápidamente.

 

 

 

Breast Biopsy Taking Care of Yourself at Home

 

This handout was written to help you prepare for your biopsy and to plan for your recovery at home.  We realize this is a difficult time for you and your family.  We hope this information will be helpful and we invite you to ask questions.  If you have any questions or concerns after you go home, please call the Breast Center at (608) 266-6400, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.  After hours, nights and weekends, please call (608) 262-0486.  This will give you the paging operator.  Ask for the doctor on call with Dr. ________________________.  Give the operator your name and phone number with the area code.  The doctor will call you back.

Biopsy Results

 

We know it can be hard to wait for the results of your biopsy.  Your surgeon or nurse practitioner will either call you or ask you to come back to the clinic to discuss the results.

 

Care of the Incision

 

You may have a dressing over the biopsy site.  Leave the dressing on for ___________hours.  Then, remove the dressing.  Look at the incision daily.  If you notice any of the following signs of infection, call your doctor.

 

  • Temperature over 100°F for 2 readings taken 4 hours apart
  • Significant swelling, firmness, or increased warmth
  • Increased redness
  • Pus around the incision
  • Heavy bleeding from the incision

 

After that, you do not need to wear a dressing over the incision.  However, a gauze dressing may be Placed between your incision site and bra if this would be more comfortable for you.  A supportive bra (no underwire) worn after surgery will give the incision support and may decrease discomfort.

 

You may have small strips of white tape (Steri-strips®) over the incision.  They will start to peel off in about 5-7 days.  Keep the incision completely dry for _______hours/days.  You may shower if you tape a piece of plastic wrap over the incision.  You may shower normally after ________hours/days.  Do not soak in the tub or swim until the incision is completely healed, usually 7-10 days.

 

Activity

 

Plan to rest after you go home.  You have received medicine to sedate you (make you sleepy) so you should not drive, drink alcohol, or make any important personal decisions.  Also, do not drink alcohol or drive if you are taking prescription pain pills.  You may return to work the next day unless your job requires heavy physical labor.  Ask your doctor if you have concerns about your activities.

 

Pain Medicine

 

For mild discomfort, you may find taking two Extra-Strength Tylenol®(acetominophen) every six hours will give you relief.  Do not take more than eight Extra-Strength Tylenol®in a 24-hour period.  For more intense pain, a prescription for a narcotic pain medicine may be given to you.

 

Breast Self-Exam

 

It is important that you do a careful breast self-exam each month.  You may feel a firm area over the biopsy site which will soften over time.  The incision will look pink and the skin around it may look bruised for a few weeks.  Some numbness may occur around the incision.  Normal feeling will most likely return in a couple of months.  If you find a new lump or notice other changes, please see your doctor promptly.
