Imatinib (Gleevec) for the Treament of Cancer HF#6606

 

Imatinib is an oral chemotherapy drug.  It is given to treat GIST (GI Stromal Tumors) and leukemia (CML).

 

How it is taken

 

Imatinib is taken by mouth.  It comes in 100mg and 400mg tablets.  It is often taken once a day.  Try to take it at the same time each day.  If a larger dose is prescribed, it may be split in half.  Half should be taken in the morning and the other half in the evening.  Be sure to read the label.  It should be taken with food and a large glass of water to avoid stomach problems. 

 

Common Side Effects

  • Decreased white blood cells and platelets
  • Rash, redness of the skin
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach problems (increased gas, heartburn)
  • Joint pain, swelling
  • Muscle pain, cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Edema (swelling) around the eyes

 

Less Common Side Effects

  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased risk of bleeding
  • Kidney failure

 

Rare but Serious Side Effects

  • Heart failure

 

When to Call Your Health Care Team

  • Diarrhea not controlled by medicine
  • Increased bruising or bleeding
  • Dark colored urine or a decrease in how much or how often you void
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Dizziness, weakness, extreme fatigue
  • Rapid weight gain or swelling
  • Yellow eyes or skin
