Cuidados en casa después de la indentación escleral y vitrectomía
Una indentación escleral es un procedimiento quirúrgico utilizado para arreglar un desprendimiento de retina. Se encaja (sujeta) la capa externa del ojo cosiendo un trozo de banda de silicona a la superficie del ojo.
Una vitrectomía es un procedimiento quirúrgico para reparar el desprendimiento de retina o para remover cuerpos vítreos, sangre y membranas del interior del ojo para mejorar la visión.
Este folleto le indicará qué esperar y qué hacer en casa después de la cirugía del ojo. Si tiene alguna pregunta sobre sus cuidados en casa, por favor asegúrese de hacérsela a su enfermera o doctor.
Qué esperar
- Debe utilizar el parche y el escudo original del ojo hasta su visita de seguimiento.
- Su doctor removerá el parche y el escudo el día después de la cirugía. Es posible que su ojo se vea enrojecido, inflamado, o magullado, y quizás tenga una pequeña cantidad de drenaje en forma de costra.
- Es posible que tenga dolor sordo, malestar, o una sensación de irritación en el ojo durante un par de días.
Qué debe hacer
- Déjese colocado el parche o el escudo por la noche. No use gotas en el ojo operado durante la primera noche a menos que le indiquen lo contrario. Siga usando cualquier otro medicamento que pueda estar administrando en el otro ojo.
- Se le proporcionarán recetas médicas para gotas y/o ungüento para los ojos. Surta las recetas y tráigalas con usted a todas sus visitas. Su doctor discutirá su uso y la duración del tratamiento. Lávese siempre las manos antes de usar las gotas para los ojos.
Si aumenta el enrojecimiento o la inflamación del ojo o la piel de los párpados, es posible que tenga alergia a las gotas para los ojos. Deje de usarlas y contacte a su doctor inmediatamente.
Cómo debe usar el estuche para los cuidados del ojo
Su enfermera le mostrará cómo usar el “estuche para los cuidados del ojo”. Por favor, tráigalo con usted a su cita.
1. Lávese las manos con jabón y agua durante al menos 20 segundos. Séquese las manos usando una toalla limpia.
2. Empape las pelotas de algodón estériles con la solución para la limpieza de los ojos que le proporcionaron.
3. Coloque la pelota de algodón humedecida contra el ojo cerrado durante unos minutos para ablandar cualquier costra que se haya podido formar.
4. Limpie cuidadosamente de la esquina interior del ojo (cerca de la nariz) hacia fuera.
5. Use una pelota de algodón distinta en cada ojo para prevenir la difusión de una infección.
Escudo de metal
Use el escudo todas las noches - o mientras tome una siesta - durante 1 semana. Hable de ello con su cirujano.
Parche del ojo
Puede usar un parche en el ojo para su comodidad y protección cuando se encuentre al aire libre. No necesita usar el parche en casa. Puede usar lentes de sol para su comodidad si la luz le molesta.
Actividades después de la cirugía
Trabajo:
Trabajo: A menos que su doctor le indique lo contrario, puede realizar trabajo liviano. Evite realizar actividades vigorosas, tal como fregar pisos. No levante nada que pese más de 30 libras durante 4 semanas. Evite toser, estornudar, picar, o machacar de forma vigorosa, o realizar movimientos repentinos o bruscos. Evite inclinarse hacia delante doblando la cintura.
Ejercicio:El aire frío no le hará daño al ojo, por lo tanto no dude en caminar diariamente (con ayuda si es necesario). Puede subir y bajar escaleras, pero no lo haga de forma apresurada.
Manejo de un vehículo:Puede manejar si su visión es adecuada. Pregúntele a su doctor sobre cuándo puede volver a manejar.
Posición – Es posible que se inyecte una burbuja de gas en el ojo durante la vitrectomía. Su doctor hablará con usted sobre la posición adecuada y durante cuánto tiempo debe permanecer en esa posición después de la cirugía. Debe seguir estas instrucciones con mucho cuidado. No puede manejar, hacer ejercicio, ni trabajar durante esta fase posicional. Si no se requiere una posición especial, duerma con la cabeza elevada sobre 2 almohadas y acostado boca arriba o de lado.
Lavado del cabello:Si se lava el cabello en la ducha, asegúrese que no le entre espuma del jabón o champú en los ojos. Siéntese con la espalda sobre el lavabo y la cabeza inclinada hacia atrás como en la peluquería. Le sugerimos que use champú para bebés.
Televisión y lectura:
Si su visión es adecuada, podrá leer después de la cirugía. No dude en ver tanta televisión como desee.
Dieta:Puede consumir una dieta normal de alimentación.
Cuándo debe llamar al doctor
- No puede controlar el dolor con el medicamento
- Náusea/vómito, lo cual puede indicar un aumento en la presión del ojo
- Aumento del enrojecimiento o la inflamación
- Disminución de la visión

Home Care after Scleral Buckle and Vitrectomy
A scleral buckle is a surgical procedure used to fix a retinal detachment. The outer layer of the eye is indented (buckled) by sewing a piece of silicone band to the surface of the eye.
A vitrectomy is a surgical procedure to repair retinal detachment or to remove vitreous, blood, and membranes from the inside of the eye to improve vision.
This handout will tell you what to expect and what to do at home after eye surgery. If you have any questions about your home care, please be sure to ask your nurse or doctor.
What to Expect
- You should wear the original eye patch and shield until your follow-up visit.
- Your doctor will remove the patch and shield the day after surgery. Your eye may look red, swollen, or bruised, and may have a small amount of crusty drainage.
- You may have dull pain, aching, or a scratchy feeling in your eye for a couple of days.
What to Do
- Leave the patch or shield on overnight. Do not use eye drops in the operative eye the first night unless told otherwise. Continue to use any other eye medicines you may be taking in the other eye.
- You will be given prescriptions for eye drops and/or eye ointment. Have the prescriptions filled and bring them with you to all visits. Your doctor will discuss their use and the length of treatment. Always wash your hands before using eye drops.
If the eye or the skin of the lids has increased redness or swelling, you may be allergic to the eye drops. Stop using the eye drops and contact your doctor right away.
How to Use the Eye Box
Your nurse will show you how to use the “eye box”. Please bring the eye box with you to your visit.
1. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Dry using a clean towel.
2. Soak the sterile cotton balls with the eye wash solution you were given.
3. Lay the moistened cotton ball against your closed eye for a few minutes to soften any crusting that may have formed.
4. Wipe gently from the inner corner (near the nose) outward.
5. To prevent the spread of an infection, use a separate cotton ball for each eye.
Metal Shield
Use the shield each night – or while taking a nap – for 1-3 weeks. Check with your surgeon.
Eye Patch
You may use an eye patch for comfort or protection when you are outdoors. You do not need to wear the patch indoors. You may wear dark glasses for comfort if light bothers your eyes.
Activities after Surgery
Work: Unless your doctor says otherwise, you may do light work. Avoid strenuous tasks such as scrubbing floors. Do not lift anything over 30 pounds for 4 weeks. Avoid vigorous coughing, sneezing, chopping, pounding, or jerking movements. Avoid bending below the waist.
Exercise: Cold air won't harm your eye so feel free to take daily walks (with help if needed). You may walk up and down stairs, but don’t rush.
Driving: If your vision is adequate you may drive. Ask your doctor about when you may resume driving.
Positioning – A gas bubble may be injected into your eye during vitrectomy surgery. Your doctor will discuss with you the proper position and how long you must remain in the position after surgery. You must be very careful about following these directions. You cannot drive, exercise, or work during this positioning phase. If no special position is required, sleep with your head elevated on 2 pillows lying on your back or either side.
Washing your hair: If you wash your hair in the shower, make sure no soapsuds or shampoo gets in your eyes. Sit with your back to a sink and your head tipped back as in a beauty salon. We suggest that you use baby shampoo.
Watching television and reading: If your vision is adequate, you may read in 3 days. Feel free to watch as much television as you like.
Diet: You may eat your normal diet.
When to Call the Doctor
- Pain not controlled by pain medicine
- Nausea/vomiting that may be a sign of increased eye pressure
- Increased redness or swelling
- Decreased vision
