¿Qué es un monitoreo por video-EEG?
El monitoreo por video-EEG nos ayuda a averiguar si su hijo está teniendo convulsiones y, si es así, qué tipo de convulsiones. Durante la prueba, una cámara grabará el comportamiento de su hijo. Esto se realiza junto al registro de un electroencefalograma de la actividad de las ondas cerebrales de su hijo. A veces, hay movimientos que pueden parecer convulsiones, pero que no lo son. Si su hijo tiene convulsiones, este estudio nos ayudará a saber cuán fuertes son y con cuánta frecuencia se producen.
Esta prueba también nos ayudará a decidir si su hijo está teniendo convulsiones silenciosas. Se trata de convulsiones que se producen sin ninguna señal física, pero se pueden observar cambios en el electroencefalograma.
Esta prueba se realizará en el hospital y puede durar entre 1 y 5 días.
Información del seguro médico
Por favor, llame a su compañía de seguro médico para averiguar si cubre el costo de esta prueba y la estancia en el hospital. Algunas compañías no lo cubren. Algunas necesitan primero una referencia (referral) de su doctor primario. Si es así, pida enseguida a su doctor la carta de referencia. Con frecuencia, las compañías de seguro médico tardan entre 2 a 4 semanas en decidir si habrá cobertura. Le harán saber qué deciden. Antes de la prueba
Hable con su hijo de antemano sobre qué esperar. Anímele a que haga preguntas. Traiga su almohada, cobija, animal de peluche, etc. para confortar a su hijo. Tenemos juegos y juguetes, pero será útil que traiga artículos familiares para su hijo tal como tarea, libros, juegos, películas, pasatiempos o suministros de arte. Traiga ropa a usar durante el día y pijamas para la noche. La camisa o blusa de su hijo debe abotonarse o tener un cierre enfrente. Por favor, no traiga playeras/camisetas. Las prendas superiores que se meten por la cabeza no pueden caber con los cables de EEG que tiene adjuntos. Lávele el cabello a su hijo la noche antes de la prueba. Por favor, si es posible póngale trenzas o una coleta.Para obtener los mejores resultados posibles, quizás se reduzca el medicamento de su hijo. Si el doctor de su hijo quiere reducir el medicamento, se hará durante la estancia en el hospital. En la mayoría de los casos, no se reduce el medicamento de su hijo antes de que venga al hospital a menos que su doctor o enfermera se lo haya indicado específicamente. Es posible que hagamos que su hijo no duerma para así iniciar una convulsión. Esto se haría durante la estancia en el hospital en lugar de en casa.
El día de la prueba
Venga temprano y regístrese en el mostrador de información (Guest Depot) ½ hora antes de la hora programada de la prueba. Usted y su hijo pasarán por la Oficina de Seguridad y entonces serán llevados a su cuarto.
- Preparación
Se asegurarán cables a la cabeza de su hijo. Entonces, se envolverá la cabeza con gasa para evitar que se enreden o sean arranquen. Es difícil para los niños el sentarse quietos durante esta parte de la prueba. Es posible que le pidan que sujete a su hijo hasta que le envuelvan la cabeza con gasa. Además, un neurólogo verá a su hijo y participará en la evaluación.
- Monitoreo
Hay una cámara de video montada en el techo de su cuarto. Comenzará a grabar enseguida la actividad de su hijo. El técnico de EEG observará a su hijo y el EEG desde otro cuarto. Es posible que le coloquen a su hijo una línea intravenosa (IV) en un brazo en caso que necesite medicamentos intravenosos para las convulsiones. Pueden producirse convulsiones más severas y/o frecuentes. Si esto sucede, el doctor de su hijo decidirá cuál es el mejor tratamiento.
- Trabajo en equipo
Le pedirán a su hijo que cuando sienta que le viene una convulsión apriete un botón unido a la bolsa de EEG para informar al personal. También le pedirán a usted que presione este botón cada vez que vea que se produce un “evento” o que va a producirse uno. Por favor, háganos saber si el evento que está viendo es típico o no. Evite ponerse de pie entre su hijo y la cámara de forma que se puedan ver todos los movimientos de su hijo. Esto ayudará al doctor a revisar e interpretar los resultados.
- Restricciones de actividad
Su hijo debe permanecer en su cuarto. Esto incluye la cama, el área alrededor de la cama, y el baño. Cada cuarto tiene una televisión y una radio con canales locales y un VCR. Usted puede dormir en un catre en el cuarto de su hijo. No dude en usar el baño de su hijo y ducharse. Se dejará una pequeña luz encendida en el cuarto toda la noche para que su hijo pueda ser visto claramente en el video. Su hijo consumirá todas las comidas en el cuarto. Usted puede traer su propia comida o comprarla y traerla al cuarto para comer con su hijo. Cuando planee marcharse del cuarto, informe a la enfermera de antemano. Se harán planes para que el personal se siente con su hijo.
Después de la prueba
Su hijo volverá a tomar su medicamento para las convulsiones antes de irse a casa. Antes de la dada de alta o cuando llegue a casa, programe una visita en la clínica para revisar los resultados con su neurólogo. En la mayoría de los casos los informes están listos en 2 semanas.

What is video EEG monitoring?
Video EEG monitoring helps to find out if your child is having seizures and, if so, what kind of seizures. During the test, a camera records your child’s behavior. This is paired with an EEG reading of your child’s brain wave activity. Sometimes movements may look like seizures, but they are not. If your child has seizures, this study will help us learn how strong the seizures are and how often they occur.
It will also help decide if your child is having silent seizures. These are seizures that lack any physical signs, but changes can be seen on the EEG.
This test takes place in the hospital and can take between 1–5 days to complete.
Insurance
Please call your insurance company to find out if this test and the hospital stay are covered. Some do not cover it. Some need a referral from your primary doctor first. If this is the case, ask your doctor for the referral letter right away. It often takes insurance companies 2-4 weeks to decide on coverage. They will let you know what they decide. Before the test
Talk to your child about what to expect ahead of time. Encourage questions. Bring a favorite pillow, blanket, stuffed animal, etc. to comfort your child. We have games and toys, but it will help your child if you bring familiar items such as schoolwork, books, games, movies, hobbies or art supplies. Bring clothes to wear during the day and pajamas for night. Your child’s shirt or blouse should button or zip in the front. No T-shirts please. Tops that pull over the head cannot fit around the attached EEG wires. Wash your child’s hair the night before the test. If your child's hair can be braided or pulled into pigtails or ponytail, please do so. In order to obtain the best test results, your child’s medicine may be reduced. If your child’s doctor wants to reduce the medicine, it will be done during the hospital stay. Most often, medicine is not reduced before your child comes to the hospital unless your doctor or nurse has specifically told you to do so. We may have your child go without sleep in order to start a seizure. This would be done during the hospital stay rather than at home.
The day of the test
Come early and check-in at the Guest Depot ½ hour before the test is scheduled to begin. You and your child will be processed through our Security Office and then taken to your room.
- Getting Ready
Wires will be secured to your child’s head. Then it will be wrapped with gauze to keep the wires from getting tangled or pulled off. It is hard for some children to sit still for this part of the test. You may be asked to hold your child until the gauze is wrapped around the head. A neurologist will also see your child and take part in the evaluation.
- Monitoring
A video camera is mounted in the ceiling of your room. It will begin recording your child’s activity right away. The EEG technologist will watch your child and the EEG from another room. Your child may have an intravenous (IV) line placed in one arm in case IV seizure medicines are needed. There can be more severe and/or more frequent seizures. If this occurs, your child’s doctor will decide what treatment is best.
- Working Together
When your child feels a seizure coming on, he will be asked to tell the staff by pressing a button attached to the EEG fanny pack. You will also be asked to press this button each time you see an “event” happening or about to happen. Please let us know if the event you are seeing is typical or not. Avoid standing between your child and the camera so all of your child’s movements can be seen. This will help the doctor review and interpret the results.
- Activity Restrictions
Your child will be confined to the room. This includes the bed, the area around the bed, and the bathroom. A TV and radio with local channels and a VCR are found in each room. You may sleep on a cot in your child’s room. Feel free to use your child’s bathroom and shower for your needs. A small light is left on in the room all night so your child can be seen clearly in the video. Your child will eat all meals in the room. You may bring your own food or buy food and bring it back to eat with your child. When you plan to leave the room, let your child’s nurse know ahead of time. Plans will be made for staff to sit with your child.
After the test
Your child’s seizure medicine will be resumed before going home. Before your discharge or when you get home, schedule a clinic visit to review the results with your neurologist. Reports are most often ready in 2 weeks.
