Sputum Induction
Test date__________________ Test time_______________
From the main hospital entrance, go to the front desk and ask them to direct you to C5/2, GI procedure desk. A respiratory therapist will meet you there. If you need to re-schedule your sputum induction, please call the Respiratory Therapy secretary at 608-263-7050.
What is a sputum induction?
This is a process to gather a sputum sample. Sputum is the phlegm that you cough out of your lungs. You will be asked to first rinse your mouth, then inhale a salt-water mist for 10 to 20 minutes until you can cough up phlegm into a cup.
The lab will study the sputum sample to see what may be causing your lung symptoms. Your doctor will discuss your test results with you (it may take a few days for the lab to complete the tests).
How do I prepare for this test?
Drink plenty of fluids the night before the test. This may help to produce a better sample.
How will I feel after the test?
You may have a salty taste in your mouth which goes away quickly. After the test you will be able to eat, drink, and keep your normal routine.
