To get to the UWHC Pulmonary Function Lab, Room E5/520, enter at the main hospital entrance, take the stone path to the D elevators to the 5th floor, turn left, then left down the first hallway to room E5/520.
What is an exercise challenge?
This is a breathing test done to help your doctor check if your airway gets tighter when you exercise. You will be asked to wear a nose clip and exercise on a treadmill or cycle for 6 to 10 minutes. Breathing tests will be done before and after exercise. Your pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen level will also be measured. This test will take 30 to 90 minutes.
How do I prepare for this test?
· Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes and exercise shoes.
· Do not exercise for at least 4 hours before the test.
· Do not eat a heavy meal for 3 hours before the test.
· No caffeine, coffee, tea, cola drinks, chocolate, smoking, or drinking alcohol for 3 hours before the test.
· Tell your doctor if you have had any recent colds, flu or other illness, as the test may need to be rescheduled.
· You will be asked to hold certain medicines before this test:
Albuterol: Hold 8 hours
Serevent or Advair: Hold 48 hours
Singulair: Hold 24 hours
Theophyline, steroids, inhaled steroids, antihistamines: Please check with your doctor.

How will I feel after the test?
You will be able to rest after your exercise. You may be given an inhaler that may make you feel slightly shaky for a short time, but you will be able to eat, drink, and keep your normal routine after the test. Your doctor will discuss your test results with you.
