Cistoscopía
Este folleto le indicará qué esperar durante una cistoscopia y qué hacer en casa después de la misma.
Una cistoscopia es un examen de la uretra (el tubo que lleva la orina de la vejiga al exterior) y su vejiga. Su doctor introducirá un pequeño cistoscopio con una luz adjunta dentro de la vejiga a través de la uretra. El doctor le llenará lentamente la vejiga con agua de forma que se expandan las paredes y se pueda ver mejor el interior de la vejiga. Se trata de un procedimiento estéril.
Su cita durará entre 1 hora y 1 ½ hora. El examen en sí dura de 5 a 10 minutos.
Antes del examen
No hay instrucciones especiales sobre lo que puede comer y beber antes del examen.
Cuando llegue a la clínica, le pedirán que nos proporcione una muestra de orina. Su doctor será informado de los resultados. Si su orina está infectada con bacteria, es posible que no podamos proceder con el examen.
El día del examen le pediremos que nos proporcione un historial médico breve, que lea un formulario de consentimiento y que lo firme. Un miembro del personal le tomará la presión arterial y el ritmo cardíaco antes y después del examen.
Informe al personal si ha tenido un reemplazo de articulación en los últimos 2 años.
Le lavaremos con un jabón especial y le taparemos con unas sábanas estériles. Usaremos un gel para entumecerle el área donde se introduce el cistoscopio.
Durante o después del examen, el doctor hablará con usted sobre los resultados y sus cuidados médicos en el futuro.
Después del examen
- Es posible que tenga ardor y una pequeña cantidad de sangre en la orina. Esto debería desaparecer después de que haya orinado varias veces.
- Beba de 8 a 10 vasos (8 onzas) de líquido durante el resto del día y la noche. Esto incluye agua, leche, té, café, o jugo.
- No tiene restricciones de actividad después de la cistoscopia.
Cuándo debe llamar al doctor
- Si la orina está enrojecida o tiene sangre durante más de 1 día.
- Si no puede orinar.
- Si la orina está turbia o huele mal.
- Si tiene dolor en la zona baja de la espalda o en las caderas.
- Si tiene ardor cuando orina durante más de un 24 horas.
- Si tiene una temperatura mayor de 101°F tomada oralmente.

Cystoscopy
This handout will tell you what to expect duringn a cystoscopy and what to do at home after your cystoscopy.
A cystoscopy is an exam of your urethra (the tube which carries urine from your bladder to the outside) and your bladder. Your doctor will insert a small scope instrument with a light cord attached into your bladder through your urethra. The doctor will slowly fill your bladder with water so the walls expand and the inside of your bladder can be seen more easily. This is a sterile procedure.
Your appointment will take 1 to 1.5 hours. The actual exam will take 5 to 10 minutes.
Before the Exam
There are no special eating or drinking instructions before the exam.
When you arrive at the clinic, you will be asked to give a urine sample. Your doctor will be informed of the urine results. If your urine is infected with bacteria, we may not be able to continue with the exam.
The day of the exam you will be asked to give a brief health history, read and sign a consent form. A staff member will check your blood pressure and heart rate before and after the exam.
Tell the staff if you have had an artificial joint replacement in the last 2 years.
We will wash you with a special soap and cover you with sterile sheets. Numbing gel is used on the area where the scope is inserted.
During or after the exam the doctor will talk with you about the results and your future care.
After the Exam
- You may have burning and a small amount of blood in your urine. This should go away after you have urinated a few times.
- Drink 8-10 (8 oz) glasses of fluid the rest of the day and evening. This includes water, milk, tea, coffee, or juice.
- There are no activity restrictions after a cystoscopy.
When to call the Doctor
- If you have red or bloody urine that lasts more than 1 day.
- If you are unable to pass urine.
- If your urine is cloudy or foul-smelling.
- If you have lower back or hip pain.
- If it burns when you pass urine for more than 24 hours.
- If your temperature is greater than 101° F by mouth.
