Getting Ready for your Ultrasound - Women's Health Clinic
Some exams require you to have a full bladder. The preparation instructions and list of exams that require a full bladder are listed below.
If you need a Full Bladder, 1 Hour before Your Test
- Empty your bladder (go to the bathroom) and then
- Drink 32 ounces (4 cups) of water in 10 to 15 minutes.
Do not go to the bathroom until after your test is done, even though you will feel the need to go.
Ultrasounds that require a Full Bladder
- Insert IUD
- All Gynecology patients (only exceptions are sonohysterogram and check placement of IUD)
Ultrasounds that DO NOT require a full bladder
- New OB
- Dating
- Viability
- OB after 12 wks
- Cervix length
- AFI (Amniotic Fluid Index)
- Fetal Position
- Placenta location
- Check placement of IUD
- Sonohysterogram
