Cervical Cone Biopsy, Caring for Yourself at Home (Includes LEEP Procedure)

The goal of a cone biopsy is to remove enough cervical tissue (a cone shaped piece) so no abnormal cells are left.  The cone-shaped piece of tissue is then studied in the lab to see if there are pre-cancer or cancer cells.

What to expect after the procedure:

  • The amount of bleeding varies but should not exceed your normal menstrual flow.  You may notice a temporary increased flow 7 to 10 days after.
  • You should use sanitary pads (NO TAMPONS) until you have been rechecked by your doctor.

Restrictions

  • Do not douche, or have vaginal intercourse until your doctor tells you.
  • Avoid sex for 4 weeks after LEEP (or use condoms) to prevent HPV re-infection.

When to call your doctor

  • Vaginal bleeding more than your normal menstrual flow.
  • Lower stomach pain that is not relieved by ibuprofen or Tylenol®.
  • Fever of 100.4 oF or higher.  Take your temperature twice a day for 5 days.
  • Any severe cramping with your next menstrual period.
  • Any foul smelling odor from the vagina.
