Por favor, llegue 15 minutos antes de su visita a la clínica y diríjase al mostrador de registro de pediatría cuando llegue. La prueba de transpiración se realiza en la Clínica de Especialidades Pediátricas del Hospital de Niños de American Family (American Family Children’s Hospital). Si necesita cambiar la cita para la prueba, por favor llame a la Clínica de Pulmonología Pediátrica.
¿Qué es una prueba de transpiración?
La prueba de transpiración se realiza para evaluar la existencia de fibrosis quística. Durante la prueba de transpiración, se toma una muestra pequeña del sudor de las axilas. Se mide la cantidad de cloruro (sal) en el sudor. Las prueba de transpiración se realiza cuando el paciente tiene síntomas de fibrosis quística (CF por sus siglas en inglés), un historial familiar de fibrosis quística, o cuando un recién nacido da positivo en una prueba de evaluación. Si la prueba de transpiración se realiza después de una evaluación de recién nacido, usted se reunirá con un asesor de genética durante esta visita.
¿Cómo se realiza la prueba de transpiración?
Se colocan dos electrodos en el antebrazo de su hijo durante cinco minutos. Estos hacen que las glándulas sudoríparas produzcan sudor. Esto produce una sensación de hormigueo leve, pero no es doloroso. Se coloca una compresa en el brazo para acumular el sudor. Una vez que el sudor esté en la compresa, se lleva al laboratorio para su análisis.
¿Tiene alguna importancia lo qué mi hijo/a coma o beba antes de la prueba?
No, la dieta no va a afectar los resultados de la prueba de la transpiración.
¿Qué pasa si mi hijo/a está tomando antibióticos o algún otro medicamento?
Debe seguir dándole los medicamentos como lo hace normalmente.
¿Estaré con mi hijo/a durante la prueba?
Sí, los padres permanecen con su hijo. Esta prueba no es dolorosa. Es de ayuda que su hijo tenga algo que le mantenga ocupado durante la prueba (tal como un chupón, un biberón, o su juguete o libro favorito). Hay un área de juego para niños pequeños en la sala de espera.
¿Cuánto tiempo dura la prueba?
Se tarda aproximadamente una hora en completar la prueba de transpiración. Puede esperar que la visita dure un total de 2 a 3 horas si espera para recibir los resultados.
¿Cuándo estarán listos los resultados?
Los resultados estarán listos una hora después de realizar la prueba de transpiración. Los resultados de la prueba se envian a su doctor. Si lo desea, puede esperar a que los resultados estén listos.

¿Cómo llego al Hospital de Niños de American Family?
Si viene del Sur de Madison por las carreteras 12/18 (Beltline Highway) tome la salida de Midvale Boulevard en dirección Norte hacia University Ave y doble a la derecha. Si viene de la zona Oeste, encuentre el camino para llegar a University Avenue y vaya en dirección Este en University Avenue. En University Avenue tome University Bay Drive (semáforos). Doble a la izquierda (Norte) en University Bay Drive. Busque las señales que indican la entrada principal (Main Entrance) del Hospital de Niños de American Family (American Family Children’s Hospital).
Si viene del Este, debe encontrar el camino a University Avenue. Permanezca en University Avenue hasta que se convierta en Campus Drive. Sweat Test
Your child has been scheduled for a sweat test

Please arrive 15 minutes before your clinic visit and stop at the pediatric registration desk when you arrive. The sweat test is done in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic at American Family Children’s Hospital. If you need to reschedule the test, please call the Pediatric Pulmonary Office.
What is a sweat test?
A sweat test is done to test for cystic fibrosis. During the sweat test, a small amount of sweat is collected from the forearms. The amount of chloride (salt) in the sweat is measured. A sweat tests is done when a patient has symptoms of cystic fibrosis (CF), a family history of CF, or when a newborn has a positive screening test. If the sweat test is being done after a newborn screening, you will meet with a genetic counselor during this visit.
How is a sweat test done?
Two electrodes are placed on your child’s forearm for five minutes. These cause the sweat glands to produce sweat. This produces a mild tingling feeling, but is not painful. A pad is placed on the arm to collect the sweat. Once the sweat is on the pad, it is taken to the lab for testing.
Will it matter what my child has to eat or drink before the test?
No, diet will not affect the sweat test results.
What if my child is taking antibiotics or other medicines?
You should continue any medicines as usual.
Will I stay with my child during the test?
Yes, parents stay with their child. This test is not painful. It will help if children have something to keep them busy (such as a pacifier, bottle, favorite toy or bok) during the test. There is a play area in the waiting room for toddlers.
How long will the test take?
It takes about one tour to complete the sewat test. You can expect the visit to take 2 to 3 hours total if you wait for the results.
When will the results be ready?
Results are ready one hour after the sweat test. Test results are sent to your doctor. You may wait for the results if you wish.

How do I get to American Family Children’s Hospital?
If you’re coming from the south of Madison on highways 12/18 (Beltline Highway) take Midvale Boulevard north to University Ave and turn right. If you are coming from the west, find your way to University Ave and head east on University Ave. Take University Ave. to University Bay Drive (traffic lights). Turn left (north) onto University Bay Drive. Watch for signs indicating the main entrance of American Family Children’s Hospital.
If you are coming from the east, you should find your way to University Ave. Stay on University Ave until it merges with Campus Drive. When University Ave splits off to the left,you should keep to the right and merge onto Campus Drive. Then, turn right on University Bay Drive. Watch for patient and visitor parking signs at the main entrance of the American Family Children’s Hospital.
