La preparación de medicamentos empaquetados en frascos con tapones de goma
(Follistim®, Gonal-F®, Repronex®, hCG)
- Lávese las manos bien con jabón y agua. Reúna los suministros que necesita y colóquelos sobre una superficie limpia y seca.
- Saque uno de los frascos de líquido y el número correcto de frascos con medicamento en polvo que se le recetó.
- Quite las cubiertas de plástico de los frascos.
- Una una aguja para sacar el medicamento del frasco (la aguja más grande de las dos que le dieron) a la jeringuilla y quítele la cubierta a la aguja.
- Si la inyección va a ser administrada de forma intramuscular, saque 2 mL del líquido y use esa cantidad para mezclarla con su medicamento.
- Si la inyección va a ser administrada subcutáneamente, saque 1 mL del líquido y mézclelo con el medicamento en polvo.
- Saque la cantidad indicada de líquido del frasco.
- Inyecte ese líquido dentro del frasco que contiene el medicamento en polvo y permita que se disuelva.
- Introduzca de nuevo el medicamento en la jeringuilla.
- Si se ha recetado más de un frasco, inyecte esta mezcla en el próximo frasco con medicamento en polvo. Espere a que se disuelva, y entonces introduzca de nuevo todo el medicamento en la jeringuilla.
- Repita este proceso hasta que haya usado el número de frascos con medicamento que le hayan recetado.
- Compruebe si hay burbujas de aire en la jeringuilla. Para sacar las burbujas:
a. Golpee suavemente la jeringuilla con el dedo para que las burbujas suban hacia la parte de arriba. Quizás tenga que golpear la jeringuilla bastante fuerte para conseguirlo. No se preocupe por las burbujas que sean pequeñas.
b. Empuje el émbolo con cuidado para que el aire salga por la aguja.
- Coloque de nuevo la cubierta de la aguja y cámbiela por la otra que va a usar para administrar la inyección. Ahora está preparada para inyectar el medicamento.
La extracción de medicamentos de un frasco con múltiples dosis
(Progesterone, Lupron®, Heparina)
- Lávese las manos bien con jabón y agua. Reúna los suministros que necesita y colóquelos sobre una superficie limpia y seca.
- Si se le ha indicado conecte la jeringuilla a la aguja utilizada para llenarla.
- Quite la cubierta de plástico del frasco. Use una toallita de alcohol para frotar bien la zona de gaucho en la parte superior del frasco usando un movimiento circular hacia fuera por 10 segundos. Permita que se seque por 20 segundos.
- Quite la cubierta de la aguja. Para introducir aire dentro de la jeringuilla tire el émbolo hacia fuera hasta que llegue al volumen deseado (vea el diagrama A.)
- Introduzca la aguja directamente en el frasco a través de la capa protectora de gaucho. Inyecte aire dentro del frasco presionando el émbolo hacia abajo (vea el diagrama B.)
- Coloque el frasco boca abajo con la jeringuilla metida dentro. Sostenga el frasco con una mano. Asegúrese de que la aguja se encuentra dentro del frasco y por debajo del nivel del fluido. Con la otra mano tire el émbolo hacia fuera hasta llegar a la marca correcta (vea el diagrama C.)
- Compruebe si hay burbujas de aire en la jeringuilla. Para sacar las burbujas:
a. Golpee suavemente la jeringuilla con el dedo para las que burbujas suban hacia la aguja. Quizás tenga que golpear la jeringuilla bastante fuerte para conseguirlo. No se preocupe si las burbujas son pequeñas.

- Saque la aguja del frasco y, si es necesario, cambie la aguja para administrarse la inyección.
La administración de una inyección intramuscular
(Repronex®, hCG, Progesterona)
Una inyección intramuscular es administrada en un músculo grande. Para estas inyecciones, el músculo grande del trasero será el que utilizamos. Debido al tamaño del músculo, se utiliza una aguja más larga para la inyección. Si está administrándose inyecciones de forma repetida, varíe el lugar del cuerpo en que las administra.
- Limpie cuidadosamente el área que va a utilizar para la inyección con una toallita de alcohol y permita que se seque.
- Para ubicar el área correcta para la inyección intramuscular, divida visualmente la nalga en cuatro partes. La inyección se administra en el cuadrante superior exterior. Vea el diagrama.
- Para inyectar en la cadera, debe estar acostada boca abajo, de pie, o apoyada contra una superficie con los dedos del pie hacia dentro, para relajar los músculos de la cadera.
- Para inyectar la aguja, extienda firmemente la piel que rodea el área seleccionada para la inyección. Sujete la jeringuilla como si fuese un lápiz. Coloque la aguja en un ángulo correcto a la piel, y rápidamente introduzca la aguja directamente a través de la piel y profundamente en el músculo. La aguja debe entrar del todo. Suelte la piel.
- Cuidadosamente tire del émbolo hasta la marca de 0.1 a 0.2 mL para comprobar si sale sangre. La aparición de sangre en la jeringuilla indica que la aguja ha entrado en una vena. No se preocupe. Saque la aguja completamente sin inyectar la medicina. Reemplácela con una nueva aguja y elija una nueva área para administrar la inyección.
- Para inyectar la medicina, empuje el émbolo con un movimiento firme y lento.
- Saque la aguja cuidadosamente y cubra el área donde aplicó la inyección con algodón o una toallita de alcohol y aplique un poco de presión hasta que deje de sangrar. Si es necesario, cubra el área con una curita/tirita.
- No cubra la aguja.
- Deseche la aguja, la jeringuilla y las ampolletas o frascos dentro de un contenedor para objetos punzantes. Si no se le ha entregado uno, por favor pida al personal de la clínica que se lo proporcione. No tire estos artículos en el cubo de la basura de su casa.
- Cuando el contenedor para objetos punzantes esté llena, por favor devuélvala a la clínica para su eliminación. Si no se le entregó una, use un contenedor de metal o plástico duro con una tapadera y llévelo a la clínica cuando esté lleno. No tire estos artículos en el cubo de la basura de su casa.
La administración de una inyección subcutánea
(Fertinex®, Follistim®, Gonal F®, Heparina, Lupron®)
Una inyección subcutánea es administrada en el tejido graso. Use el area inferior del estómago y muslos para inyectar dentro del tejido graso. Asegúrese de alternar las áreas si se administra inyecciones de forma repetida. No inyecte más de 1 mL de solución con cada inyección. Use una aguja de tamaño 25 (a menos que le indiquen algo distinto).
- Limpie el área de la inyección con alcohol o jabón y agua, y permita que se seque.
- Con una mano, tome o pellizque la zona alrededor del área seleccionada para la inyección.
- Con la otra mano, agarre la jeringuilla como si fuese un lápiz.

- Retire la aguja rápidamente, en el mismo ángulo con que la introdujo. Aplique presión cuidadosamente por 30 segundos en el área con una toallita de alcohol o una gasa. Puede dar un masaje suavemente. En el caso de la heparina, ponga presión por 2 a 3 minutos para prevenir la supuración o la formación de moretones. No aplique masaje en el área de la inyección.
- Deseche la aguja y la jeringuilla dentro de un contenedor para objetos punzantes. Cuando la caja esté llena, devuélvalo a la clínica para su eliminación. Si no le han entregado una, use un contenedor de metal o plástico duro con una tapadera y llévelo a la clínica cuando esté lleno. No tire estos objetos en el cubo de la basura de su casa.

To Prepare Medications Packaged in Vials with Rubber Stoppers
(Follistim®, Gonal-F®, Repronex®, hCG)
- Wash your hands with soap and water. Gather the supplies you need and place them on a clean dry surface.
- Take out one vial of liquid and the correct number of vials of medication powder that were prescribed for you.
- Flip off the plastic caps on the vials.
- Attach a fill needle (the larger of the two needles you were given) to the syringe and remove the needle cover.
- If your injection will be given intramuscularly (IM), withdraw 2 mL of liquid and use that amount to mix with your medication.
- If your injection will be given subcutaneously (SubQ), withdraw 1 mL of liquid and use that amount to mix with your medication.
- Withdraw the indicated amount of liquid from the vial.
- Inject that liquid into the vial of medication powder and let it dissolve.
- Draw back all of the medication into the syringe.
- Inject this mixture into the next vial of powder, if more than one has been prescribed for you. Wait for it to dissolve, and then draw all the medication back into the syringe.
- Repeat this process until you have drawn up prescribed number of medication vials.
- Check for air bubbles in the syringe. To remove the air bubbles:
a. Tap the syringe with your finger to make the bubbles rise to the top of the syringe. You may have to tap fairly hard to do this. Do not be concerned about small bubbles.
b. Push gently on the plunger to push the air out the needle. Before removing the needle from the vial, be sure you have the proper volume in the syringe.
- Put the cover back on the needle and replace it with the needle to be used for injection. You are now ready to inject the medication.
To Draw Medication from a Multidose Vial
(Progesterone, Lupron®, Heparin)
- Wash your hands well with soap and water. Gather the supplies you need and place them on a clean, dry surface.
- Attach a "fill" needle to the syringe if indicated.
- Flip the plastic top off the vial. Use an alcohol swab and wipe the rubber top of the vial thoroughly using an outward circular motion for 10 seconds. Let it dry for 20 seconds.
- Remove the needle cover. To draw air into the syringe, pull the plunger back to the desired volume (see diagram A).
- Insert the needle straight into the vial through the rubber protective layer. Inject air into the bottle by pushing down on the plunger (see diagram B).
- Turn the vial upside down while the syringe is in. Hold the bottle in one hand. Be sure the needle is in the bottle and below the fluid level. Draw back the plunger to the correct mark with the other hand (see diagram C).
- Check for air bubbles in the syringe. To remove air bubbles:
a. Tap the syringe with your finger to make the bubbles rise to the needle. You may have to tap fairly hard to do this. Do not be concerned about small air bubbles.
b. Push gently on the plunger to push the air back into the bottle. Before removing the needle from the vial, be sure you have the proper volume in the syringe.
- Remove the needle from the vial and, if necessary, change to the needle to be used for injection.
Giving an IM (Intramuscular) Injection
(Repronex®, hCG, Progesterone)
An intramuscular injection (IM) goes into a large muscle. For these injections the large muscle in the buttock will be the muscle used. Because of the size of the muscle a longer needle is used for the injection. If you are giving repeated injections, alternate the sides of the body.
- Clean the injection site well with an alcohol swab or soap and water and allow it to dry.
- To locate the correct injection site for an intramuscular injection, visually divide the buttock into four quarters. The injection is placed in the upper outer quadrant. See diagram.

To inject into the hip, you should be lying face down or standing or leaning against a surface with toes pointed inward to relax the hip muscles.

To inject the needle, firmly spread the skin taut around the chosen injection site. Hold the syringe like a pencil. Position the needle at a right angle to the skin, and quickly insert the needle straight through the skin and deep into the muscle. The needle should go in to its full length. Release the skin.
- Gently pull back the plunger 0.1 to 0.2 mL to check for blood. The appearance of blood in the syringe means that the needle has entered a vein. Do not be concerned. Withdraw the needle completely without injecting the medicine. Replace it with a new needle and select a new injection site.
- To inject the medication, push in the plunger with a slow steady motion.
- Gently withdraw the needle and cover the injection site with cotton or alcohol wipe and apply a small amount of pressure until the bleeding stops. If necessary, cover the site with a band-aid.
- Do not recap the needle.
- Discard the needle, syringe, and ampules or vials in the Sharps box. If you have not been given one, please ask the clinic staff to provide one. Do not throw these items into your household trash.
- When the Sharps® box is full, please return it to the clinic for disposal. If you were not given a Sharps® box, use a metal or heavy plastic container with a lid and return it to the clinic when it is full. Do not throw these items into your household trash.
Giving a Sub-Q (Subcutaneous) Injection
(Follistim®, Gonal F®, Heparin, Lupron®)
A subcutaneous (SubQ) injection goes into fatty tissue. Use the lower stomach and thighs to inject into fatty tissue. Be sure to rotate the sites if you are giving repeated injections. Do not inject more than 1 cc of solution with each injection. Use a 25-gauge needle (unless told otherwise).
- Clean the injection site with alcohol or soap and water, and allow to dry.
- With one hand, grasp or gently pinch up the area around the injection site.

- Push slowly down on the plunger until the syringe is empty.
- Withdraw the needle quickly, at the angle in which it was injected. Apply gentle pressure to the site with an alcohol wipe or gauze for 30 seconds. You can massage gently. For heparin, put pressure for 2-3 minutes to prevent oozing or bruising. Do not massage the injected area.
- Dispose of the needle and syringe in a Sharps® box. When the Sharps® box is full return it to the clinic for disposal. If you were not given a Sharps® box, use a metal or heavy plastic container with a lid and return it to the clinic when it is full. Do not throw these items into your household trash.
