Home Care After Your Laparotomy
Please call to make a follow-up doctor visit. Your doctor will tell you when you need to be seen again.
Activity
- You may shower and shampoo. Do not soak in the bathtub or swim until cleared by your doctor.
- You may ride in a car, but do not drive for 2 weeks or until you see the doctor.
- Do not lift more than 15 pounds for 6 weeks.
- No tampons, sexual intercourse, or douches until cleared by your doctor at your clinic visit.
- Stay home the first week and relax. You may do light walking and climb stairs.
- The second and third week you may slowly increase your activity. Listen to your body for cues. Avoid fatigue, take time to rest.
When to Call your Doctor
- Fever over 100.4°F.
- Bleeding or pus from the incision or redness.
- If pain persists or becomes more severe.
- Bright red bleeding from the vagina.
