Your Home Care after Hysteroscopy

What is a Hysteroscopy?

This is an exam that allows the doctor to look at the inside of your uterus.  A hysteroscope is a thin, lighted tube that is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.  This can be done with general or local anesthesia.  This exam can be helpful in finding the exact nature of a health problem such as abnormal bleeding, scar tissue, growths, or trouble getting pregnant.

What can I expect after the exam?

You will be required to rest about 2-4 hours after the exam.  Plan to go home the same day.  You may have cramping (like menstrual cramps) for up to 48 hours.  Some women have slight bleeding for a day or two.

Diet

If you feel sick to your stomach after you go home, start out slowly with liquids such as broth, tea or Jello®.  Add solid foods to your diet as you feel better.

Pain Relief Measures

If you have pain or cramping, take 1-2 tablets of acetaminophen (such as Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (such as Advil® or Motrin®). Your doctor may prescribe stronger pain medicine for you.

Activity

1. Do not drive for 24 hours since you may be drowsy.

2. It is safe to resume normal routines as soon as you feel able.

3. You can shower within 24 hours, but do not swim or bathe for 72 hours or until after the bleeding or discharge stops.

4. Do not have sexual intercourse, douche, or use tampons until after the bleeding or discharge stops.

When to Call

1. A fever over 100.4ºF for two readings 4 hours apart.

2. Severe abdominal pain.

3. Heavy bleeding (more than a normal menstrual cycle or if you are changing pads hourly).

4. Vaginal discharge that is foul smelling, cloudy or greenish in color.

Follow-Up Care

You will have a clinic visit with your doctor in about 2 weeks.
