Pharmacy Nutrition Support Residency

Activities

 

Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Rounding with one of the medical teams daily
  • Investigation of medication error reports and patient/medication safety follow-up
  • Drug information, literature searches, reading and contributing to team files
  • Attending codes
  • Quality improvement activities, audits
  • Communication/interaction with pharmacists, physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and dietitians
  • Working with fourth-year Doctor of Pharmacy clerkship students
  • Co-precepting pharmacy practice residents and junior administrative residents
  • Inservices for pharmacy staff, residents, nurses and physicians
  • Contributing as a member of the medical team and nutrition support team

Projects

  • Major research project will be presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference and the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin Educational Conference
  • Major projects may be also be presented at Clinical Nutrition Week (as part of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition annual meeting) 

Presentation Opportunities

  • Pharmacy and nursing inservices
  • Inflammatory bowel disease conference (gastroenterologists)
  • Leadership of biweekly journal club discussions 

Teaching Opportunities

  • Clinical instructor status at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy
  • Discussion with medical residents during clinical conference
  • Preceptorship of fourth-year students on clinical rotation at the hospital
  • Didactic lecturing at School of Pharmacy
  • Teaching certificate program for residents at area hospitals through the School of Pharmacy 

Other Activities

  • Meetings with director of pharmacy and speakers discussing clinical and administrative topics
  • Patient and medication safety involvement
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support training
  • Opportunities to interact with residents in oncology, pharmacy practice, administrative, drug policy
  • Option to take additional University of Wisconsin college classes 

Travel

  • Support to attend either the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, or the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Meetings
  • Great Lakes Pharmacy Residents Conference
  • Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW) Conference
