The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Presents, "Diagnostic Medical Sonography - a SOUND career decision"

The Ultrasound School (known as the School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography) is a hospital-based clinical training program hosted by UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin.

 

The school holds a formal affiliation agreement with UW-Milwaukee to provide professional clinical training to Bachelor of Science candidates enrolled in the College of Health Sciences Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree program. Applicants complete the first two years of their degree requirements at UW-Milwaukee (either directly or via transfer credits), then apply to our program for the last two years of professional coursework. If accepted, students complete the junior and senior years of training with our clinical instructors, both in the classroom and at various clinical sites in the surrounding area. Graduates of the program receive a B.S. degree from UW-Milwaukee.

What is a diagnostic medical sonographer? 
 
Diagnostic medical sonography uses ultrasound, or high frequency sound waves, to characterize and diagnose diseases in body organs and tissues. The use of ultrasound in medical diagnosis has become widespread in recent years. Among the parts of the body most commonly evaluated with ultrasound are the:
  • Heart 
  • Blood vessels
  • Abdominal organs
  • Pelvic organs
  • Pregnant uterus
The diagnostic medical sonographer is a health care professional who performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations under a physician's supervision. To perform imaging on patients in the clinical setting, sonographers are required to integrate medical knowledge of:
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Pathology
  • Ultrasound physics
