Dr. Clancy founded the Sports Medicine program at UW-Madison in 1974 and has made significant contributions to the field of sports medicine. He is the past president of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. He developed the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction techniques now used by surgeons worldwide. His surgical patients have won more than 20 gold and silver medals in the Olympic Games and world championships and he has treated athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, LPGA, PGA and World Cup soccer. Dr. Clancy was the team orthopedic physician for the U.S. hockey and ski teams as well as U.S. team physician at three Olympic Games. He is a professor at the School of Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and Head of the Division of Sports Medicine. He is the head team physician and orthopedic surgeon for the University of Wisconsin athletic teams.
