Steven Ewer, MD, FACC

Steven M. Ewer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry and biology from Cornell University in 1996. He went on to receive his medical training at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 2000. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan in 2003 and fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., in 2008. He then joined the faculty at University of Wisconsin as an Assistant Professor in 2008.

In addition to his general cardiology practice, Dr. Ewer established the University of Wisconsin Cardio-Oncology Clinic in 2009. The first of its kind in the state, this clinic provides care for cancer patients with cardiovascular problems related to cancer and its treatment. Dr. Ewer has a particular interest in prevention and management of chemotherapy-related cardiomyopathy, which also remains an active focus of his academic efforts.

Dr. Ewer's clinical interests also include adult echocardiography, with expertise in transthoracic, transesophageal and stress echocardiography. He has been an integral part of the UW Health Heart Valve Clinic since its conception, helping establish the transcatheter aortic valve implantation program at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Ewer continues to provide transesophageal echocardiographic imaging support for transcatheter aortic valve implantation, as well as other structural heart interventions, such as catheter-based repair of atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects and perivalvular regurgitation.

Dr. Ewer is also involved in the teaching and training of medical students, sonography students, residents and cardiovascular medicine fellows. He attends regularly on the inpatient cardiovascular medicine teaching services and contributes to the fellowship lecture series. Dr. Ewer also developed and implemented a novel simulation-based curriculum for procedural training in transesophageal echocardiography that helps cardiovascular medicine fellows prepare for their clinical procedural experience. He is a member of the Clinical Competency Committee, which oversees the education and mentoring of cardiovascular medicine fellowship trainees.
