Michael Altaweel, MD, is a UW Health ophthalmologist and a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He specializes in diseases of the retina, macula and vitreous, as well as ocular oncology, providing advanced medical and surgical care for complex eye conditions. His clinical interests include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular hole and epiretinal membrane, as well as retinal detachment and vascular occlusive disease. He also treats dislocated lens and intraocular lens complications, ocular trauma and ocular tumors including melanoma.

Dr. Altaweel is committed to delivering patient-centered care, emphasizing thoughtful diagnosis and tailored treatment plans to preserve and restore vision.

Dr. Altaweel’s research focuses on retina imaging and diseases of the retina, including diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and macular edema. He is also involved in clinical research evaluating adalimumab versus conventional immunosuppression therapy for patients with non-infectious, intermediate, posterior and panuveitides, with the goal of improving outcomes for patients with complex inflammatory eye diseases.
