About

Melanie Schmitt, MD, is a UW Health ophthalmologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Schmitt provides basic eye care services, such as eye exams and glasses/contact fittings, and treats a full array of eye conditions. She specializes in double vision, pediatric cataracts, congenital tear duct obstructions, pediatric and adult strabismus (eye misalignment) and inherited retinal disorders (rare conditions that damage the eye).

Dr. Schmitt enjoys building long-lasting relationships with her patients. She listens to their experiences, questions and concerns and presents information clearly, so they can make the best decisions for their eye health. She views patients through a holistic lens and works to support their overall health and well-being.

Additionally, Dr. Schmitt is involved in clinical research that focuses on inherited retinal degeneration in children and adults.

Outside of work, Dr. Schmitt enjoys spending time with her family and being active. She has participated in Ironman competitions and marathons and played on the University of Wisconsin’s inaugural NCAA Division I women's hockey team during college.

I value the opportunity to improve a person’s vision because it has a huge impact on their quality of life.
